Later one-half black leather over marbled boards bordered in gilt, spine with four raised bands bordered by gilt panel lines, lettered in gilt in two compartments and with gilt designs in the other three compartments, dark blue endpapers, sm 8vo. Described as 'second edition' on the dedication page while p. [iv] has advert for 15th thousand of this work. Freeman no. 38. The half-title page was not issued for this edition and includes the 1845 preface and 1860 postscript to the preface. From the research collection of herpetologist Lauren E. Brown with his signature on the front blank endpaper.
