1775. Battista GUARINI - Il Pastor Fido tragicomedia pastorale del signor cavalier Battista Guarini - 1775. In Venezia appresso Francesco Pitteri. Cartoncino rustico; 16° cm 15 x 8,7; pagg. 202  (2); discreto, con fioriture e alcuni lievi camminamenti di tarlo che intaccano al massimo qualche lettera. Frontespizio con vignetta xilografata, qualche testatina e capilettera, anch'essi in xilografia. Il poeta Battista Guarini(Ferrara 1538 - Venezia 1612) fu autore di rime, trattati e di una commedia (La idropica, 1584) e deve la sua fama al Pastor fido (1589), tragicommedia pastorale con cui inaugurò un nuovo genere, privo di precedenti nella classicità e di giustificazioni nella Poetica di Aristotele. La vasta polemica letteraria che ne seguì, e che si protrasse per i primi decenni del sec. 17°, è di estremo interesse per la storia della lotta contro l'aristotelismo. Foster who helped with the translation of the fourteen volume Livy into English in the early 1900's. Spine brown leather, brown label and gilt lettering. 3/4 bound in brown leather, marbled boards. Minimal to no shelfwear, ink writing in margins throughout, significant number of pages. 'N36' to first title page, page 39/40 has a small tear in the lower fore corner, minor age stains. Complete with seven plates; NOTES ON MARGINALIA: The vast majority of leaves have marginalia to 1-3 lines per page, with no more than 2 words per line. The leaves with the most marginalia include p. 47 (to 13 lines), p. 54 (to 16 lines), p. 87 (to 10 lines), and p. 116 (to 11 lines). (Photos of all 4 attached.)
