In 1940 he compiled his many interviews into a two-volume book, Fathers & Sons, which earned him a place on the Gestapo's most-wanted list. During the Nazi occupation, he sought protection for himself and for one hundred families under Cardinal Angelo Rotta, Papal Nuncio of Hungary, and is credited with saving the lives of these families.
