Description:
[African American South] [Literature] Bradford, Roark. The Green Roller. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1949. Stated First Edition. Hardcover. The book is comprised of two short stories and 12 sermons in verse in the style of stories told by Southern African-Americans. Profusely illustrated with drawings by Peter Burchard; red cloth lettered in black in a pictorial dust jacket and mylar covering. Bradford is a white author who was inspired by African American preachers and recorded sermons of Black proletarian ministers of the time. He previously wrote Ol' Man Adam an' his Chillun. His main inspiration came from Rev. John Wesley Henning who told imaginative Biblical stories told through the Southern African-American lens. The Green Roller is tale of a Black Southern Preacher who trains 12 disparate proteges to preach, with commentary on WWII and the human condition. Original jacket chipped, not price clipped. Overall very good condition.
