Synopsis: On holiday in Italy in 1853, Captain Nicholas Carey -- persuaded by his cousin Andrew -- finds himself involved in the escape of three Italian revolutionaries from the Papal States. He rejoins his regiment, only to be sent to Paris by his uncle to find Andrew, who is still involved with the Italians. He and Andrew foil an attempt on the life of Napoleon III before Nicholas and his comrades are sent to fight ini the Crimean war, where he proves he is a worthy member of the Carey family.
