First edition (first printing). A very good copy in blue cloth with gold decoirations and lettering on front cover and spine. Mild edge and corner wear. Hinges cracked, still a very nice copy. No dust jacket.

Gilt bright and in excellent condition, some very light wear along edges, two tiny stains on back, otherwise very clean. Top edge gilt. Some light browning to pages, very clean. Crack at page 192-3 but spine still very strong, all pages fully intact. With sixteen engraved plates with tissue guards. List of books by Harriet Beecher Stowe in rear. Author is her son.

Three-quarter leather over marbled boards, marbled end papers. TEG. Gilt rule and gilt bands and design on spine. Leather is rubbed exposing boards at corners and heavily rubbed at joints and spine, although the gilt is still isible and legible. 3/8" circle of exposed board on front. Spine is reinforced having separated at front hinge. Ffep is tender and has a 3' closed tear at the top. The text block is very good or better, clean and tight throughout. Stowe's son compiled this biography from Stowe's letters and journals with her approval for the project. Stowe (1811-1896) was from a prominent religious family and an ardent abolitionist.
