Bright, clean covers; some fading of spine and spine titles and decorations, but all remain legible; small splits at spine head with light rubbing wear; tightly bound; age darkened end papers; gift inscription on front free end paper; very clean interior; leaves unopened at head edge throughout - never been read; bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown at lower inner corner. 8vo, 265 pp +  28 page publisher's adverts at rear; illustrated with 36 woodcut engravings and 9 hand colored steel plate engravings (including title page). No statement indicating this is a subscriber's edition.

Original red cloth on boards. Limited edition. Top edges gilt. No writing or tears. Library gift plate and rejection stamps, but no sign of circulation. Paper label on lightly faded spine. This binding matches all my other Surtees listings by Eyre and Spottiswoode (8 volumes in all). This story seems less well-known than some, but is credited with an exhilarating account of a hare hunt. Tom Scott may have little luck with women, but he is entranced by dashing perilously after small four-legged creatures from the back of a larger one. Thus he qualifies as a true sportsman ! You can be the first to read this copy, since it has several uncut leaves. 204 crisp, clean pages ! Library gift bookplate and rejection stamps, but no sign of circulation. Feels like a new book.

Crack to paper of upper inner joint but very firm, 1 1/2 inch crack to base of lower joint but there again very firm, some light occasional rubbing but overall a very good and attractive copy.
