Niagara, C. W. (Canada), 1852. Very good condition. A very rare, unrecorded, Australian gold rush broadside, advertising to Canadians outside of Toronto a ship departure to the gold rush in "Sydney" via Boston, and carrying Edward Roper, an artist who pictorialized the Australian bush. It is not recorded on WorldCat, Trove or the Canadian National Catalogue and handsomely printed in a variety of bold type fonts. In February 1851, gold was discovered at Ophir near Orange in New South Wales by Edward Hargraves. This find launched the Australian gold rushes. Most likely based on this information and the slow pace of accurate news moving about the globe, Sydney was cited as the destination for the ship Concordia. At some stage between the printing and their arrival in Australia, the destination of the ship was changed to Melbourne and the Victorian gold diggings. 1880. Four albumen photographs of Sydney, all with the Charles Bayliss blind stamp. Charles Bayliss (1850 - 1897), one of Australia's preeminent landscape photographers, who worked for years with Merlin and Holtermann before setting up his own shop in Sydney in 1879. He established his studio at 348 George Street; then moved to 335a George Street, advertising himself as a photographer of city and country views, often with people, and making views to be sold individually while also contributing images for albums. He also made remarkable 360 degree panoramas of the city of Sydney around this time. These four images are mounted on a page from an album, with handwritten captions in black ink. The first photograph, "Sydney Harbor, NSW" is a view looking over rooftops toward the harbor and tall masted ships moored and docked; and "Sydney Observatory", looking up toward the building from a lower vantage point; both with handwritten labels laid down and with the C. 1886. Very good condition. Very large albumen photograph of Sydney's harbor of the area now known as Farm Cove, with the Charles Bayliss stamp at the lower left corner. Bayliss, Photo, Sydney". 10 3/4 x 8" (20 x 27cm) print; album page: 16 x 12". Trove 41642848 cites a photograph of the same title but at a much smaller scale (20 x 15cm).

Melbourne, 1885. Very good condition. View with a man standing under a gum tree looking toward the magnificent three story brick hotel with ornately decorated balconies, overlooking the ocean. The hotel was built in the 1870s and today is known as the Grand Pacific Hotel. 8 x 6", with a T & M watermark.

1890. Australian Christmas card showing the harbor with a three-masted tall ship at anchor. Mounted on dark green stiff card akin to stereo cards, printed in the margins "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" and "The Land of the Golden Fleece". The "Botanical Gardens Sydney" title is handwritten with a fine gold ink. Text in gilt, gilt beveled edge. Photo 6 x 3 1/2" on card 6 1/2 x 4 1/4". Corners a bit rubbed, image quite bright in the foreground, the ship a trifle less distinct. Not found on Trove.

Switzerland, 1850. Very good condition. Striking lithograph of the view at Port Jackson, of the Sydney Heads, taken from the foot of the lighthouse. From a German edition of Dumont D'Urville's 'Voyage Autour du Monde'. A view of the cliffs, with ships out to sea and three gentlemen viewers in the lower left foreground, one possibly sketching. Paper size, 10 1/4 x 6 1/2". Very bright and clean image.

1815. Very good condition. Early hand colored copper engraving of Sydney, with Aborigines tending a fire at the left foreground, tents on the shore in the middle ground, and the harbor with many sailing ships, and the city in the distance. With the text sheet, in both German and French, which describes Sydney as a place of exile for English criminals: "Elle [Sydney] sert en meme tems (sic) de lieu d'exil pour les criminelles anglais, qu'on y transporte, et que l'on applique aux ouvrages publics (sic), jusqu'a ce qu'ils aient subi leurs peines." At the top of the text sheet, "Melanges, CXCV, Vol VIII, No. 48". Text sheet with a bit of fox spotting; the upper corner with 3/4" crescent torn away, not affecting text. Besancon, France: La Solidarite, 1919. Wraps. Good + overall. An unusual World War I pamphlet which describes one of the world's most complex time pieces. This astronomical clock at Saint John's Cathedral in Besancon France, was installed in 1860 and is still operating today. It features 30,000 working pieces, 122 indicators, 70 dials, local time in 17 places around the world (including Sydney!), the time and height of tide at 8 French sea ports, a perpetual calendar and more. 12mo, 8pp. Printed paper wrappers; front wrapper slightly marked, otherwise very good condition. OCLC: 40379138 records only one copy at Princeton.

1938. Very good condition. Two unusually artistic photograph albums filled with collage photographic images of New South Wales, the South coast, and New Guinea. Adorned with poetry, philosophy, wit and wisdom, and the author's personal commentary written in gold ink to accompany the photographs of a man identifying himself as 'The Vagabond', in his travels through Australia and New Guinea in 1936 and 1938. The author of these albums is unidentified except by his pseudonym. There are several snapshots of the man, who looks to be in his 50's or 60's, or lived hard in the years he's wearing. Several of the poems give us clues that he is an American, working and traveling in Australia in 1936 and 1938. The Beautiful Riviera Estate [Proposed Development Of West Head Area, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, Sydney] From the text: "This property consisting of 639 acres is the most picturesque in the County of Cumberland... £1,000,000 to be made out of The Riviera by correct handling.... The completion of the North Shore Bridge [Sydney Harbour Bridge] in two years' time (1931) will materially improve the opportunities..." From the Dictionary of Sydney: "The area which now forms the northern portion of Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park, passed through the hands of various owners. Sydney: Caxton Steam Machine Printing Office, 1871. Wraps. Very good - condition. Scarce biographical booklet, the only one on Ristori published in Sydney, describing the life of the Italian actress Adelaide Ristori, renowned as a tragedienne. Ristori visited Australia with a large Italian entourage for 4 months in 1875, performing in Ballarat, Melbourne and Sydney, and this booklet was likely published as a promotional piece for the tour. This Australian booklet is not dated, although Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia assigns a date ca. 1871. It was translated from Italian into English to be used as an advertising piece for Ristori's 1875 Australia tour. It was published at the Caxton printing office, which was functioning under that name until 1876. Adelaide Ristori (1822 - 1906) toured widely, including Paris (1855, 1856), London, Madrid (1857), and the United States (1866).
