Description:
Boston: Forbes Lith. Mfg. Co., 1876. First edition. This scarce tinted lithograph was issued to commemorate the escape of Irish political prisoners from Fremantle, W.A. on April 17th 1876. The Fenians are shown rowing towards the bark, which is under full sail. The Catalpa is flying a flag with the initials "J T R" - for John T Richardson, the ship's agent. A pennant with the letter C, the Fenian flag, and the American flag are also flying. The police boat is in hot pursuit and the British steamship "Georgette" is steaming in from a distance. Among the Fenians freed in this effort was John Boyle O'Reilly, who became a leading citizen in Boston, and was later to edit the 'Boston Pilot'. Captain George Anthony, an American whaling captain out of New Bedford Massachusetts recruited a crew for this mission and set sail for Western Australia where two Fenian agents, John Breslin and Tom Desmond had already established themselves with aliases. With several delays, the day for the escape was set for the…

Description:
London: George Baxter, 1853. Very good overall. Robert Peel was the Conservative Prime Minister of the UK from December 1834 to April 1835, and again for almost five years from 1841 to 1846. He created the modern concept of the police force while Home Secretary, and it is from his name that English police are called "bobbies" or "peelers" in Ireland. As Home Secretary, he deeded vast tracts of land in the new Swan River Colony to his cousin Thomas, now Perth in Western Australia. ALS addressed from Whitehall, Nov. 2 (no year), thanking G. Hayden for the note he wrote at the request of Dr. Williams re: the recent death of the old governess Madame Girardin. Written by a secretary, and signed boldly, Robert Peel. 5x8", with 2 old folds, very good condition. The Baxter print was issued in 1853, shortly after Peel's death. The original embossed Baxter title stamp on the mount. Slightly sunned with a couple of marks in the outer margins.

Description:
Amsterdam, 1747. Very good condition. One of the earliest depictions of Western Australia by a European, after Van Keulen's well-known view "Swartte Swaane drift opo het Eyland Rottenest" published in Francois Valentyn's "Oud en nieuw Oost-Indien" in 1724-6. This copper engraving is after a drawing by Jacobus van der Schley, published somewhat later in 1747 in "Historische beschrijvingen der Reizen" 1747. The print depicts two sailing ships & two long boats preparing to row up the Swan River, and the island discovered by the skipper de Vlamingh of the Dutch East India Company in 1696, and named Rat's Nest (Rottnest). With the S shaped river in the distance dotted with black swans. Copper engraving, 5 1/2 x 8" with large margins. See Landwehr, 266-7. Fine condition.
