Very good: Externally very clean with rubbed corners, edge s; spine a bit loose; front hinge lightly cracked. Interior clean and bright with no foxing. Notoriously prone to wear, a very nic e copy. .

The film is a parody of Mother Goose nursery rhymes using car icatures of Hollywood celebrities of the 1930s. . thing from this production. . e wear to edges with numerous chips and tears, but not affecting the image. . d. Date stamped November 1939; probably an archival reference si nce the film was released in 1938. . Sparks became known for portraying dour-faced, sarcastic, cigar-c homping characters. He became so associated with the type that, i n 1936, The New York Times reported that Sparks had his face insu red for $100,000 with Lloyd's of London. Purportedly, they agree d to pay the sum to any photographer who could capture Sparks smi ling (Sparks later admitted that the story was a publicity stunt and he was only insured for $10,000). .

In the form of two photograph albums, two-post, decorated burgundy covers, black paper pages, with two cards mounted per page.
Condition: individual cards range from Good with occasional folds and creases to Fine – mostly the latter. The album is fair only with extensive exterior wear, creases and tears to some of the pages – not affecting the cards.

The artist’s first book of theatrical and literary caricatures - f ollowing a two-year stint drawing for Vanity Fair and the New Yor ker. Dozens of caricatures of American and British celebrities f rom the 1920s. Four color plates, 6 b/w plates, the remaining car icatures in black and white line drawings. Introduction by Carl v an Vechten. Near fine in poor d/w. Corners lightly rubbed, light ly soiled at spine ends. The very scarce d/w is split in half wit h a 1.5” open tear at top of spine and numerous closed tears an d chips along edges. .

Illustrated end papers satirizing K-Q cards in red and blue and title-page in red & black. Afterword, " Social Satire" by the cartoonist. "Subscription Edition" publishe d in December, 1935; also published in a numbered edition of 500 copies. Very good-near fine; a clean tight copy with only very m inor edgewear, small scuff on front board. Lacking the scarce d/w as usual. .
