Paris: Editions Roger DaCosta. 1972. Facsimile edition of Bidloo's noted atlas of human anatomy first published in Amsterdam in 1685. Large 4to (11"x16"), bound in bu rgundy leatherette, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. No. 411 of 2000 copies printed. A bit of rubbing at top and bottom of sp ine, otherwise fine. The atlas is illustrated with 105 plates by Gerard de Lairesse, showing the human figure both in living at titudes and as dissected cadavers. The book was later plagiarized by English surgeon William Cowper for his Anatomy of the Humane Bodies (1698), which gave no credit to either Bidloo or de Laires se. This led to a number of vitriolic exchanges between Bidloo an d Cowper, including several pamphlets published in each anatomist 's defense. William III, Dutch stadholder and king of England, asked Bidloo to become his personal physician in 1695. The king died in his arms on 8 March 1702. .

English translation of se venteen verses by Goethe, Schiller, Moerike, Uhland, Hebbel, Theo dor Storm, Keller, Guenther, Gleim, Boie, Hofmannsthal, Liliencro n and Buerger. The Pelican Press was founded in 1916 by Sir Franc is Meynell, with the active involvement of Stanley Morison - a Br itish typographer, designer and historian of printing. He was one of the most influential type-designers of the 20th century, havi ng designed the Times New Roman typeface (1931) and several histo rical revivals for the Monotype Corporation. A couple of stray pe ncil marks on FFEP otherwise absolutely pristine -- as if it came off the press today. In very good glassine d/w with several smal l tears and creases and original cardboard box that is split at a ll 4 hinges. .

Pen and ink calligraphy, illuminations with watercolor h ead and tail pieces, and in-text illustrations all on hand-made p aper. The artist/author is unknown. Clean, tight and unmarked in terior. Covers torn and chipped on all edges. Date unknown but pr obably from late 1950’s - early 1960’s. .

[First thus; the true first edition was published in folio form with etchings by another artist.] , 9-1/4”x6”, full vel lum binding, gilt titles and decorations, untrimmed pages. 60 pp. [2 advt] Woodcut decorations and ornaments in the text plus eig ht etchings by Tristam Ellis. Good condition. The covers are soil ed with some spotting and chipping; very lightly warped -- though less than commonly found. [A publisher’s slip notice inside st ates that the book is prone to warping. Losse at the front joint. Prior owner’s bookplate inside front cover. Text block is clea n and bright; some of the tissue guards for the etchings are crea sed. The book is notoriously prone to wear and, despite these def ects’ it is one of the more attractive copies we have seen. .

(Author's inked limitation statement is on title page.) Th e plays are entitled: The Horse, The Ox and Ass, St Martin, The C at Burglar, Tunning Water, The Crockodile. The Interior is gener ally fine throughout, with some age-toning on end papers. A few s mall, light spots on front cover. Lightly rubbed along edges, clo th on front edge of spine somewhat frayed.This copy contains an i nked gift inscription on the front end paper from bookseller Jake Zeitlin to Helen Dahlstrom (wife of Grant Dahlstrom, Castle Pres s) and has Zeitlin's shop seal affixed inside back cover. .

A very g ood copy, but with a 1/4" chip from the leather spine label and s ome flaking at edges. Interior is clean and tight overall but wit h some age-toning to paste-downs and end papers. The text is previously unpublished and is illustrated with a suite of 28 color wood engravings by Daragnes illustrated the Montmarte area of Paris where his studio was loca ted.
