A nice copy of Drury's stunning novel which was characterized by Jonathan Karl as a "compelling portrait of American social and political history." The book was awarded the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Covers lightly soiled & sunned mostly in the margins, one corner bruised, brief offsetting at endpapers & pastedowns, binding cracked at half-title page causing three leaves to partially detach, still good in very good dust jacket with brief wear at the spine extremities & tips. Edward Bunker's second novel and the basis for the neo-noir film of the same name. Alice Duer Miller's gathering of satirical poetry, prose, & a three-page play all related to women's rights & suffrage, much of which was originally published in the New York Tribune. Particularly engaging is the section entitled "Campaign Material" in which Ms. Miller provides tongue-in-cheek reasons for denying suffrage:
"BECAUSE no woman will leave her domestic duties to vote;
Because no women who may vote will attend to her domestic duties;
Because every woman will vote as her husband tells her to; ...
Because will form a solid party and outvote men ..."

Toned, stained, soiled, tattered, small losses not affecting text, shallow diagonal corner creasing throughout, about good & still quite useful.
An early edition, perhaps the first American, of part of Dumas' "Celebrated Crimes" series, originally published in 1839 & 1840. The series provides semi-fictionalized accounts of the most noteworthy criminal cases in European history.

Binding lightly faded & soiled, corners bruised, otherwise Very Good. Internally, a bit age toned, otherwise Fine. Pages 1 through 69, recorded in different inks excepting 4, are hand-numbered, very occasionally dated, with several initialed "L.D.C." presumably written sequentially between the mid to late fifties & early sixties (as suggested primarily by correspondence). Pages 53 & 54 comprise a poem entitled "Two Graves" which are typed & pasted in. Page 65 provides a tipped-in TLS on "Old Sturbridge Village" letterhead dated November 26, 1962, signed by editor & author Catherine Fennelly accepting for publication Mrs. Chambers poem, "Covenant," which is supplied in manuscript on the adjacent page. Bindings worn: mostly small losses at spine extremities, volume one with chip affecting lettering, volumes three & four with brief staining toward the base of the spines, edges & corners rubbed, otherwise a good & still quite useful set.
The first 5 volumes comprise Tales, volume 6, Poems, volume 7 through 9, Criticisms, & volume 10, Miscellany.

Bindings very slightly soiled, shallow loss & fraying at the top of the spine on volume six, spine labels a bit toned & foxed, couple of hinges starting to crack (still secure), a good or better set.
A nice set of Burns who is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, enhanced by numerous illustrations & printed music.

The author, one of the most promising French West African poets of the Negritude literary movement, died in a plane crash in 1960 at age 33.
Quite uncommon, OCLC locates 8 copies under 5 accession numbers of which two have substantially different pagination. No copies are found in the United States.
