Description:
Orig. pub. 1953, 1962. Reprinted 1983, 2003. Print on Demand Edition, 2009. The set The Pascagoula River Valley includes Jackson County, Mississippi, and George County, which was part of Jackson County for a century. The existing written and legendary material on this region has been brought together in the first volume of this set, entitled History, Story, and Legend of the Pascagoula Country, which covers the history of the territory up to 1817. Part I of Volume II (History and Genealogy of the Pascagoula River Country) covers additional history of the region, from 1812 to 1960. Part II of Volume II, over half the book, is devoted to genealogy: names of immigrants coming into the region, the census of 1850, families of 1860, cemetery records, and Bible records. Three courthouse fires in Jackson County make this volume particularly valuable as a source of genealogical records.

Orig. pub. Atlanta 1932. Reprinted 1978, 1979, 1984, 1999. Print on Demand Edition 2014. ii, 530 pp., new index Lumpkin County, gold capital of North Georgia, was formed in 1932 from Cherokee, Habersham, and Hall counties. This book traces the early history of the area, covers the economic and social impact of the gold discovery, and then details the general history of the county up to 1932. A general account of the original inhabitants, the Cherokee Indians, is followed by a description of the "period of Intrusion," when Indians, the Federal Government, Georgia, and individual settlers competed with each other for land in the area. This conflict was ultimately resolved by a land lottery dividing the territory among white settlers and removing the Indians to western lands. Chapters deal with the earliest settlement in Auraria and the county seat, Dahlonega. The U.S. Branch Mint at Dahlonega is discussed. Lists include muster rolls of over 750 Civil War veterans and all World War I soldiers. The book… Read More

Orig. pub. Spartanburg 1940. Reprinted 1976. Print on Demand Edition 2010. 338 pp., illus., index This book presents the history of Spartanburg County as compiled and written by the Spartanburg Unit of the WPA Writers' Program. Members of the project, under the editorship of Fronde Kennedy, researched courthouse records, newspaper files, and other sources for information on the affairs of city and county. An account of the formation of the Spartan Regiment, the Revolutionary battles in the county, and the stubborn resistance of Upcountry partisans to British and Tory dominance serves as an introduction to a balanced history which focuses more on events than individuals. The development of the county is covered under the following headings: the making of Spartan County; Spartan District, 1800-1825; the courthouse village; the old iron district; looms and spindles; doctrines and dogmas; schools and learning; the prosperous fifties; social life in the old days; secession and war years; political… Read More

The original area of the county encompassed the following modern day areas: all of Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, and Rutherford counties in North Carolina and Cherokee, Chester, Laurens, Spartanburg, Union, and York counties in South Carolina; and parts of Buke and McDowell counties in North Carolina and Greenville and Newberry counties in South Carolina. In 1779 Tryon County was divided into Lincoln and Rutherford counties in North Carolina and ceased to exist.
