(vi), 511, xlvii pp. Henry Lee published this work in response to aspersions cast upon his father, "Light Horse" Harry Lee, by chroniclers of the American Revolution, in particular Justice William Johnson of South Carolina. Notwithstanding the son's obvious bias, the volume is a standard source for the history of the Revolution in the South. The author covers background events in the life of General Nathanael Greene, and stresses heavily the activities of Lee in South Carolina, at Guilford Court House, in overall relation to the Southern Strategy, at Augusta, at Eutaw Springs, and at John's Island. The Appendix contains correspondence between Washington, Greene, Lafayette, Lee, and others and is especially revealing as to the character of the officers involved and the concerns of some over the necessity of maintaining the public morale.

Alabama was the cradle of the Confederacy and William Lowndes Yancey was the moving spirit of secession. It is an insightful look into Georgia's history through a detailed examination of towns that flourished and then faded away. With specific emphasis on the colonial period, the work explores the role Georgia's settlers played in conflicts with Spanish and British colonial powers, as well as the economic and social factors that caused these towns to thrive, but ultimately to fade away. This collection of letters and papers relating to the Revolution in South Carolina is the result of 25 years of collecting by the editor, Robert W. Gibbes, a physician, newspaper editor, politician, and historian of Columbia, South Carolina. They cover the years 1764 through 1782. While the material is primarily concerning South Carolina, there is ample mention of individuals and activities in neighboring states as well as the entire Southern campaign. The usefulness of the original material is greatly enhanced by the inclusion of new indexes for the volumes in this reprint edition. The first volume concerns mainly William Henry Drayton; the others contain military correspondence, a good portion of which is letters between Francis Marion and various other officers and officials. The set Dr. Alexander Hewatt (or Hewat) is known as the first historian of South Carolina and is best known for this two-volume work. He was a Presbyterian minister in Charleston from 1763 to 1777. Not sympathetic with the Patriot cause, he returned to England in 1775 but remained interested in South Carolina until his death in 1828. While the books are primarily South Carolina material with a strong Charleston and lowcountry emphasis, he also devotes considerable space to Virginia, North Carolina as a part of the Carolinas colony, and Georgia, in particular in Volume II. His history includes observations of the peoples of the area, accounts of slaves and the institution of slavery, and accounts of the Indians. He pays due attention to agriculture and economics in the colony. Written as a series of historical vignettes, the book contains sketches of the pioneer settlers and information on the dangers they faced and the way they lived. The political, legal, religious, and educational aspects of the county are covered. Civil War rosters are included along with letters from the troops.
