Description:
Orig. pub. Philadelphia 1824. Reprinted 1975. Print on Demand Edition 2019. (vi), 511, xlvii pp. Henry Lee published this work in response to aspersions cast upon his father, "Light Horse" Harry Lee, by chroniclers of the American Revolution, in particular Justice William Johnson of South Carolina. Notwithstanding the son's obvious bias, the volume is a standard source for the history of the Revolution in the South. The author covers background events in the life of General Nathanael Greene, and stresses heavily the activities of Lee in South Carolina, at Guilford Court House, in overall relation to the Southern Strategy, at Augusta, at Eutaw Springs, and at John's Island. The Appendix contains correspondence between Washington, Greene, Lafayette, Lee, and others and is especially revealing as to the character of the officers involved and the concerns of some over the necessity of maintaining the public morale.

(viii), iv, 364, viii, 373-396, illus., maps Upper South Carolinians who risked their lives and fortunes in the Revolutionary War faced neighbors who had remained loyal to the Crown and hostile Cherokee Indians. The British were instrumental in stirring up the Cherokees, who occupied land now comprising Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee counties. A major campaign against the Indians was fought by upper South Carolinians, Georgians, western North Carolinians, and Tennesseans within the framework of the Revolution. These and many other facts of the early history of the South Carolina Upcountry are detailed in this classic work on the Colonial period and Revolutionary War campaigns in the Upcountry. The book covers the Upper South Carolina governmental organization at the beginning of the Revolution and goes on to detail the battles in the region. Chapters are devoted to the battles of Cowpens,…

Description:
Orig. pub. Mobile, AL 1876. Reprinted 1975. Print on Demand Edition 2018. xv, 528 pp. This is an important book for the study of the organization of political parties in the South, consisting in great measure of original material. Alabama was the cradle of the Confederacy and William Lowndes Yancey was the moving spirit of secession. The book concentrates on political factions in Alabama in the 1850s and includes many of Yancey's speeches. Other Gulf states enter the picture with the intrusion of the federal government. Early Indian problems are covered as are South Carolina's Nullification efforts. Particularly intriguing is the dialogue within the Cotton Belt regarding the Border States. The author is concerned with examining the reasons for the secession of the southwestern states with an aim of obliterating sectional misunderstanding. He considers factors leading to secession in the context of Alabama history and the events of national history leading up to the election of Lincoln and the…

Orig. pub. Savannah, 1878. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2009. 263, 64 pp. + maps, index This volume was originally published as Volume IV of the Georgia Historical Society's Collections and includes Itinerant Observations in America, 1745-46, by Edward Kimber. It is an insightful look into Georgia's history through a detailed examination of towns that flourished and then faded away. With specific emphasis on the colonial period, the work explores the role Georgia's settlers played in conflicts with Spanish and British colonial powers, as well as the economic and social factors that caused these towns to thrive, but ultimately to fade away. Specific focus is given to the towns of Old Ebernezer (1733) on the Savannah River, Frederica (1735) on St. Simon's Island, Abercorn (1733) on a tributary of the Savannah, Sunbury (1758) on the Medway River, and Hardwick (1755) on the Ogeechee River. The communities of Petersburg, Jacksonborough, and Francisville are also mentioned as are about fifteen…

Description:
Orig. pub. London 1779. Reprinted 1962, 1971. Print on Demand Edition 2015. The set Dr. Alexander Hewatt (or Hewat) is known as the first historian of South Carolina and is best known for this two-volume work. He was a Presbyterian minister in Charleston from 1763 to 1777. Not sympathetic with the Patriot cause, he returned to England in 1775 but remained interested in South Carolina until his death in 1828. While the books are primarily South Carolina material with a strong Charleston and lowcountry emphasis, he also devotes considerable space to Virginia, North Carolina as a part of the Carolinas colony, and Georgia, in particular in Volume II. His history includes observations of the peoples of the area, accounts of slaves and the institution of slavery, and accounts of the Indians. He pays due attention to agriculture and economics in the colony. In his discussion of political events, he was obviously biased against the Proprietors and the Anglican Church but for the Royal government and the…

Here are interwoven names and stories from the earliest days of Dougherty County until well into the twentieth century.
