In this work he examines ships from the point of view of their excavations, looking at craft from a range of ages, the people who discovered their wrecks, and what we have learned from them.

Historian Geiger and anthropologist Beattie are acknowledged experts on Englishman James Knight, and in particular his mysterious disappearance in 1719 along with his two ships and forty men. Beattie discovered the truth in 1989 and spent four Arctic summers to uncover the evidence of a group of brave men who died in the Arctic three centuries ago.

McKee focuses on the 1816 wreck of the French frigate Medusa, inspiration for Gericault's famous painting in the Louvre. The ship's captain originally implied it to be a fairly ordinary wreck, until the stories emerged of mutiny, suffering slaughter and eventual cannibalism. McKee dramatically recreates the tragedy, but also spots patterns of human behaviour under stress. To do this he extends his research into related areas, such as the behaviour of British seamen drifting on rafts in the same area in World War II, as well as to the infamous stories of The Donner party and the 1972 Andes crash. Investigative journalist Colvin turns his attention to the mysterious death of Leslie Howard whose civilian flight was shot down over the Bay of Biscay in June 1943. The common belief was that the attackers thought Churchill was on board and thus targeted the plane. Another theory, though, is that film star Howard was the intended target: was he, wonders Colvin, in fact a secret agent? The author looks at a number of mysteries surrounding the fatal incident.

Former RAF pilot Ralph Barker wrote a range of books including this fascinating study of some of aviation's great mysteries. The stories of some of the classic aviation mysteries are here, including: Star Tiger, the first of the ill-fated Tudors of British South American Airways, and the cases involving Glenn Miller, Amelia Earhart and Bill Lancaster, among others. Explorer and underwater archaeologist Wignall turns his attention in this book to a series of excavations of ships ranging from a 2nd century Roman ship off Sicily to a nineteenth century steamer off the North wales coast. Most of the ships described are are among the most important and historic ships of the Elizabethan era, including flagships from the Spanish Armada Santa Maria de la Rosa and the Gran Griffin. All the excavations are underpinned by extensive preparatory research, and the accounts themselves convey the excitement and frustration of such a venture.

Mitchell asks and answers some stimulating questions, including: when and why did piracy begin?; who became pirates; what was the difference between 'pure' pirates and apparently more legitimate counterparts; and why did piracy start to decline? The author covers a huge range, not just the Spanish Main and the South Seas, but Viking, Arab and Malay raiders, the little known Uskoks, and the many female pirates. All the big names are also present, including Kidd, Blackbeard, Drake and Bloodaxe.

It's not a new idea: ever since people have sailed in ships, others have made their living by robbing them. And more than once they have changed the course of history. Marrin tells the tales of these adventurers, from Drake landing at Plymouth in October 1567, through to Henry Morgan the Buccaneer Prince, Captain Kidd, Mary Reed, to the Barbary Pirates and many more. The many illustrations comprise old prints and engravings, diagrams and maps.

Gershom Bradford, who died at 98 years old in 1978, wrote a number of books around the theme of the sea. Here he turns his attention to one of the greatest of all maritime mysteries, the Mary Celeste. She was found deserted in December 1872. What caused her captain, his family and crew to abandon the vessel or to disappear without trace? While many theories have been advanced over the years, Bradford here concentrates on the likelihood that a waterspout was responsible. An interesting and well thought-out solution.

Generations of treasure hunters have failed to find the location of the great Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, since she foundered in a hurricane in September 1622 and swept into the coral reefs of the Florida keys. Now, after a 16 year search, Mel Fisher found the remains and salvaged an incredible cargo of doubloons, pieces of eight, precious stones and jewellery, as well as fascinating everyday objects. The book tells the story of the hunt, and of the treasure trove at the end of it. The many colour photos show a fascinating insight not just into the objects found but also the hunt team's methods of finding it.
