Amberley Publishing. New Condition. 2010. Soft Cover. 8vo 1848683057 Paperback: Illustrated with photographs. 96 pages clean and tight. Before William Stanley Lambert became a cadet in 1883, he had already sailed 44,890 miles round the world in a childhood voyage that took him two years to complete. He returned to England determined to pursue a career in the Royal Navy. His letters home from the service, assiduously compiled by A. B. Demaus, record the experience of a capable, ambitious cadet during a time of rapid technological change and relative peace. The Navy's task of protecting the empire's vast assets had not been interrupted by a major war since Nelson's day. Lambert's sea service, virtually all of which was overseas, involved time in two corvettes, an ironclad central battery ship, two cruisers, and a battleship. In his later career, he became the commanding offi cer of one of the earliest destroyers. He vividly describes the shipboard life and 'runs…

The British Library Publishing Division. Very Good. 2011. Hard Cover. Sm 4to 0712358439 Colour illustrated boards, no dj. No ownership marks. 390 pages clean and tight. This comprehensive carto-bibliography gives an account of geographic intelligence provision for the British army in much of the nineteenth century as reflected in nearly 1600 contemporary maps, plans, views and drawings produced at the centre of British military administration. The book provides, for the first time, an aggregate listing of the cartographic records produced by the Quarter Master General's Office, the Topographical & Statistical Depot (later the Topographical Department) and the Intelligence Branch. The material described mirrors the wide range of intelligence requirements regarding major conflicts, lesser-known wars and actions, expanding colonial and overseas interests, and domestic security concerns. More than thirty conflicts mapped include the Peninsula Campaign, the Crimean War and the…

Wessex Archaeology. Very Good. 1997. Soft Cover. 4to 1874350205 Paperback: xvi + 317pp, inc. 34 plates + 161 figs & plans, laminated card. Clean and tight. Dimensions: 24.3 x 16.8 x 1.9 cm .Five excavations were undertaken in advance of construction of the A27 Westhampnett Bypass, near Chichester. One of these, on a low hill discovered the remains of a Late Iron Age religious site and Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon cemeteries. The Late Iron Age site is exciting as it is so far unique within England in its size and associated features. At least two shrines were revealed, as well as a range of pyre sites and 161 cremation burials. The Romano-British cemetery contained one pyre site and 36 graves, often containing urned burials and comparatively well furnished with grave goods. The Anglo-Saxon cemetery was represented by 10 inhumations graves, identified only from 5th-7th century AD artefacts assumed to be grave goods. .

W. H. & L. Collingrade Limited. Very Good/Fair. 1961. Hard Cover. Sm 4to Dust jacket tears and loss to edges, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling. No ownership marks. Numerous illustrations. 128 pages clean and tight. Most gardeners like to design their own gardens or, if they take over a ready made garden, they usually wish to alter it in some way. The desire to plan is there but so often they lack ideas, or perhaps they know that they want a rock garden, a pool, a lawn and some shrubs but they cannot visualize a suitable layout. This book is packed with ideas and the excellent perspective drawings which accompany the plans give the reader a picture of the finished designs. There are, too, many designs for such features as arches, screens, gates, sundials, steps, paving, paths and garden seats from which to choose. Lists of selected plants for various purposes have been included and also many unusual plants are illustrated to help the reader with his…

Teamwork, determination and the confident application of the mailed fist of concentrated panzers wreaked havoc amongst the Allied tank forces first in Poland then in France. The panzer divisions went on to spearhead an attack on Russia that tore the guts out of the Red Army; they were to bring the British in North Africa to the point of defeat; and they were able, even in the final stages of the war, to give the mighty American armies a very severe shock during the Battle of the Bulge. In attack well-nigh invincible, in defence stubborn and determined, the German panzers virtually dominated the course of the land battle in World War II. Panzers at War shows what it was like to serve in a panzer division, in all…
