Description:
There are forty-four 10.75" x 13.5" mounted albumen photos from the Passion Play at Oberammergau. This portfolio of photos is credited to Joseph Albert (1825-1886), a German Photographer and inventor. The Passion Play tells the story of Jesus, from his visit to Jerusalem to his crucifixion. In the autumn of 1871, after the Passion Play had been interrupted and resumed due to the Franco-Prussian War, the Play was documented at the express request of King Ludwig II by his famous court photographer Joseph Albert. This portfolio is undated, but appears to be from this time period. The red covers are tattered and stained. There is evidence that there was once onion skin protective papers between the photos at one time. The photos have edge wear and chips. The first two photos have reddish stains at the edges. A few photos are numbered in pencil at the bottom right edge. I read that there were originally 60 photos, so 16 are missing. The set is incomplete, though I can find only one complete set available online. Read More

Description:
12 1/4" x 14 3/4" x 2 1/4", portrait orientation. Generic photo album, in excellent condition, some wear to the rear part of the spine but otherwise splendid. The paper, though cheap newsprint, is not chipped nor creased, with only a few minor closed tears. 40 leaves/80 pages. Although the journey up Kilimanjaro took place in July-August 1959, the scrapbook actually has items dating from 1957 and continuing to 1960. The journey was organized on behalf of the Appalachian Mountain Club (the nation's oldest outdoor organization, centered in the northeast), with 8000 members at the time, 18 of whom went on this particular trip - the AMC's first to the continent of Africa, organized and led by the intrepid Ms. Swanzey Alberta Stutsman (1911-2003), assistant advertising manager of Mass Mutual Life Insurance Co., of Wilbraham, a suburb of Springfield, Massachusetts. It was Ms. Stutsman herself who compiled this scrapbook, packed with letters, newspaper clippings, greeting cards, postcards, photographs, all… Read More

Description:
9" x 6 1/4" Victorian photo album full of 69 carte de visites. 20 leaves total/ 35 pages in use. All but 5 inserts contain photos. Of the handful of CDVs I pulled out from the page, these locations were noted: Frankfurt, Germany; Versailles, France, Liverpool, U.K, and the Grotte au Glacier a Grindelwald in 1871 (where two men hold hands to keep steady along the ice.) Of the CDVs pulled, few were provided with credit to the photographer, named: Henry Sampson, A. Gabler, and another attributed to Chris Krause in Berlin. There is plenty more to be seen if this album is pulled apart in full. CDVs are of sepia tone. Inserts measure 2 1/16" x 3 1/14" with decorative edge. The edge of each page is colored red with an embossed golden pattern. The cover exhibits wear and distress. A latch mechanism is only half intact. Apparently unrelated, a bookplate graces the inside front cover reads: Flag and Staff Erected 1862 with the signature of "Annie Haven Thwing", with photo of flag and staff provided. Thwing… Read More

Description:
The Pennington Seminary, founded in 1838, known today as The Pennington School is located in Pennington, New Jersey. At its inception, it was an all boys academy and became a co-ed school in 1854. In 1910, the prep became a school for boys once more. This 72 leaves/144 pages, 9 1/4" x 12" school boy's scrapbook album contains approximately 150 photographs, newspaper clippings, school songs, bills & programs. This material in this album was made between 1910-1913. There is one item from 1901, and one from 1909. Inside the front cover, "UNDERHILL" is stamped indicating the property of Arther Underhill, class of 1913. Underhill was an industrious young man. He was a member of the Alpha Omega fraternity, track & field, gymnastics, football, and baseball. He won "Neatest Room in Liberty Hall" for which he received $5. Almost all of the newspaper clippings are to do with the school's sports teams, including football, racketball, baseball, etc. Several photographs document the fraternities at the time:… Read More
