Description:
Begun in 1941 and including twenty-one illustrated volumes, the Smithsonian Institution War Background Studies series was intended to increase general knowledge about those regions affected by the Second World War, particularly those located in the Pacific. These volumes proved to be very popular with the public, leading to an increase in the print run in 1943. In addition, the army and navy began ordering copies to increase the knowledge of their service members.
Volume 20, on China, was written by A.G. Wenley and John A. Pope, both notable Sinologists who worked at the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery. The Freer Gallery of Art, part of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, was the Smithsonian's first art museum, and houses one of the most significant collections of Asian art, with examples dating from the Neolithic to the twentieth century. At separate times, both Wenley and Pope served as directors of the gallery, and both had firsthand experience of the impacts of the war on Asia. Wenley… Read More

Description:
A.M. Klein (1909-1972) was a major Canadian poet and an important figure in the Jewish-Canadian community. He was a member of the Montreal Group of modernist poets who were inspired by the works of W.H. Auden, T.S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound. In addition, much of his poetry was informed by his experiences as a Jewish Canadian.
The Rocking Chair was his last work of poetry, and was something of a departure in terms of subject matter, focussing primarily on the themes of French Canada. It was one of his most notable works and considered by many to be his best.
This copy appears to be an advance review copy as it comes with a request from The Ryerson Press for reviews of the work. This volume is in Very Good condition, with some staining to the cover and the front and back paste downs and flyleaves. The dust jacket is present and also in Very Good condition with some age-related discolouration.

Description:
Written by the husband and wife writing team of Egerton (1858-1920) and Agnes Castle (1860-1922), the Incomparable Bellairs was a work of popular fiction recounting the drama of the resort town of Bath, set in the Georgian period. This work is a sequel to The Bath Comedy, and the two were amongst their best-known works. This volume is part of the Nelson series of uniform classics which was published between 1909-1937. No date of publication is given in this volume. Overall, it is in Very Good condition. There is some light bumping and wear to the corners, and to the top and bottom of the spine. The gilt lettering and detail on the spine are clearly and in tact, though perhaps a little faded. There is a signature from a previous owner on the from endpaper. The dust jacket is missing.

Description:
Catherine Ahearn (b. 1949) is a bilingual Canadian writer of poetry, prose, and essays, amongst other artistic endeavours. She was the first poet laureate of Ottawa from 1982 to 19984.
Thus Spoke Superman was her fourth collection of poetry, published in 1980 and is partly inspired by Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, dealing with many of the themes which he treated in that work. As per the description on the back of Ahearn's work, "It is in updating and expanding, in poetic form, some of Nietzsche's theories as well as in bringing into play her personal mythology that Thus Spoke Superman succeeds in creating a work of art that is both individualistic and profoundly lyrical."
This volume is in fair condition. There is much wear and discolouration to the covers and a small tear likely from a previous price sticker. A name and date that was written on the cover page in pen has been drawn over with black marker which is visible on the other side of the page. There is also an old price in pencil.… Read More

Description:
A sweet tale about a Scottish terrier named Buttons trying to fit in with the bigger dogs. Written by Alf Evers, who was known for his sweet, fable-like stores for children, and illustrated beautifully by Marguerite Kirmse, who was known for her drawings of dogs.
This volume is unfortunately in poor condition, though this is largely based on the state of the paper wrappers. The staple bound wrappers have separated from the book, but the pages inside remain together and in tact. There are crayon marks on the front cover, and tears to the wrappers that have been fixed on the inside with masking tape. There is a tear to the top of the front wrapper, and the first page.
Other than a small crayon mark on the final page, and the masking tape on the inside of the front and back wrappers, the inside of the book is in excellent condition, and is filled with beautiful illustrations and a sweet story that may still be enjoyed.

The The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church according to the use of the Anglican Church of Canada, published in 1959, was a revision of the 1918 edition ordered by the General Synod of the Anglican Church in 1943.
The revisions did nothing to alter the fundamental meaning or intention of the text, but rather were intended to better communicate the faith.
This volume is in poor condition. There is a previous owner's name written on the flyleaf, as well as an address sticker. The Primate's Prayer for Anglican Mission is stuck to the front pastedown. The front hinge is slightly cracked, and the covering of the spine has separated at the front edge and along the top. There is also slight paint staining to the front edge of the cover.

Description:
Part of the Nelson's Library of classic works, The Dolly Dialogues was one of Anthony Hope's most successful works, though of a decidedly different tone than the work for which he is likely best known, The Prisoner of Zenda. Set amongst the trappings of London high society in the nineteenth century, this comedic work tells of the romantic misadventures of Dolly Foster and Sam Carter. This volume is in Very Good condition, with a slight lean. There is slight wear and bumping to the corners, and some staining to the red cloth along the bottom edge of the front cover. Description:
Archibald Lampman (1861-1899) was a Canadian poet born in what was then known as Upper Canada, and is counted amongst a group of early Canadian poets identified as the "poets of the Confederation" as a result of their close temporal proximity to the foundation of Canada as a country.
In addition to writing pieces for the Toronto Globe newspaper, Lampan wrote nearly three hundred poems later in his life, only some of which were published before his death. The majority of his poems were published in periodicals, but Lyrics of the Earth is one of three volumes of poetry which he published. He was best known for short poems on natural themes, and there were to be his poetic stock-and-trade, despite unsuccessful attempts at longer, narrative poems of an epic bent.
This volume of Lyrics of the Earth was published by The Musson Book Company Ltd. of Toronto in 1925, and includes and introduction by fellow "poet of the Confederation" Duncan Campbell Scott. He writes in the introduction that the motivation… Read More
