Description:
Edinburgh: Printed for David Brown, 1820. 54pp. With half-title. Stitched in recent blue paper wrappers. Contemporary ink inscription of 'Miss Isabella Crawford, 1820' to head of half-title. George Anderson Vetch (1785-1873), Scottish-born officer in the Bengal Native Infantry who fought in the Anglo-Nepalese War. This was the only title of his five works to be published entirely pseudonymously, perhaps because Sultry Hours, also published in 1820, was on the receiving end of withering criticism in the Asiatic Journal. Vetch prefaces this collection by explaining that 'Some of the following pieces appeared in the Periodical Papers of Calcutta...he looks for no other gratification, that the pleasure of leaving them, as a small town of his regard, amongst his friends in his native land, and of presenting them, as a trifling nuzur, to his friends in India, on his approaching return to that country'. Not in Jackson.. First edition. 8vo.
