Macaulay called this work "one of the best accounts of the civil war; unlike the British officers in Dom Pedro's service, he had no personal grievances to embitter his style" (They Went to Portugal p. 330). It is well written, with a wealth of concrete detail about conditions in Portugal and Spain at that time. Badcock (1786-1861), who had served earlier in Montevideo, then in Spain and Portugal during the Peninsular Wars, was sent to Portugal as part of an English military mission dispatched to study the situation in Portugal at the beginning of the civil war between D. Pedro and D. Miguel. One of Badcock's duties was to learn the movements of Spanish troops on the Portuguese frontier and to determine, if possible, the intentions of the Spanish. In the preface, the author refers to Benjamin Rush's account of the yellow fever epidemic which struck Philadelphia in 1793. He also refers later in the text to Erasmus Darwin, who had been a major influence on his medical and scientific thinking. The present work is valuable as a relatively early case study of a scarlet fever epidemic.Baeta, after having receiving a degree in philosophy at Coimbra University, was unable to continue with his medical studies at Coimbra due to sympathies with the French Revolution. He fled Portugal in 1797. Completing his medical degree at Edinburgh, he was greatly influenced by Erasmus Darwin, with whom he established a strong friendship. The Conde de Farrobo had supported D. Pedro with large loans; Ferreira Pinto Basto had lent money to D. This French edition has two more plates than the Portuguese edition: one showing the coast of Angola, another a plan of the Fort of Cabinda.
