1919. TLS dated 11 June 1919 on 'Cadbury Bros Ltd'-headed paper (25.3 x 20.3cm), comprising two paragraphs addressed to Mr E. F. Hill and closing with Laurence John Cadbury's distinctive signature in black pen: "L J Cadbury". Four folds, a trifle soiled, with pen-offsetting to reverse. Else, in excellent condition, probably due to being laid in to Hill's copy of the British Museum's Guide to the Exhibited Manuscripts Part III: Illuminated manuscripts and bindings of manuscripts exhibited in the Grenville Library (London: British Museum, 1923; very good). Polite and practical in tone, the letter mentions a cheque in payment for the illuminated pages to be signed by the King and Queen (who visited Bournville in 1919) and discusses Hill taking students to Selly Manor, about which Cadbury is encouraging. Spine starting at rear hinge, but binding holding firm. Scant foxing to beginning and end, occasional pencil scoring, else, clean. Empty, torn envelope addressed to 'F.S. Cocks Esq, M.P./ House of Commons,' with 2 1/2p stamp and 3 Jan 1946 postage mark laid in. This copy belonged to Frederick Seymour Cocks (1882 1953), Independent Labour Party MP for Broxtowe from 1929 until his death. Cocks also authored tracts for the anti-war Union of Democratic Control, as well as a biography of E.D. Morel (1920), his fellow Labour Party MP and campaigner against the exploitation of the Congolese peoples in the Belgian rubber trade.

A pleasing copy of the first Carr novel, a family saga with a female protagonist set in Tudor times.

Else, tight. In Barbara Kaiser's spectacular wraparound dust jacket: spine sunned, creasing and nicking, minor colour leaching to reverse, still, the panels wonderfully bright (and brash). A robust copy of Carter's postmodern tour de force. Good+/ good+ Nights at the Circus won the 1984 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, alongside J. G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun.

It was published as Saints and Strangers in the US.

As Dorothy Craigie's dust jacket neatly encapsulates, Caspary's novel is set in a pulp crime publishers, with Noble Barclay inspired by Bernarr Macfadden, the American magazine publisher and advocate of physical culture. Caspary had worked briefly on one of Macfadden's magazines in the 1920s, getting to know his daughter, Eleanor (the namesake of Barclay's daughter).
