In cloth folding case, with inner chemise.In June, 1775, the Massachusetts physician and patriot entrusted to his paramour a letter in ciphers intended for his brother-in-law, the Boston printer and Loyalist John Fleming. Top one inch of the extreme leading edge of a few leaves at the end very slightly stained green, the same color as the cloth. Very good copy.

The online Project records a transcript of our letter as having appeared in the Southern Literary Journal, 11 November 1937. Written to John H. Garth (1837-1899), of Hannibal, Missouri, one of Clemens's closest childhood friends and one of the models for the character "Joe Harper" in "Tom Sawyer", and "Jack Stillson" in his unfinished "The Mysterious Stranger." Captain Colville was the local seafarer who was dispatched to buy the Duke of Lancaster in Liverpool in 1826. He became agent of the Cameltown Steamboat Company, the oldest steamship company on the Clyde, while McTaggart, Esq., of Kilkivan, was the first chairman of a reorganized company. The meeting resulted in the second steamer, Saint Kiaran, being built in Greenock. Folded, else fine.

A VERY LARGE EXAMPLE OF 18TH CENTURY SCHERENSCHNITTE OLD TESTAMENT FOLK ARTCOX, James, fl. 1741. Large folio "Scherenschnitte," or scissor art, depicting scenes from the Old Testament, 21 ½ x 17", laid down on contrasting black mat, in a 19th century frame, signed both in ink, and by scissors work, "James Cox, Midhurst [West Sussex, England] January 27, 1741."
Scherenschnitte is the visually stunning traditional folk art of cutting continuous paper designs, and often has symmetry within the design, i.e. "scissor snipping", or "scissor cutting." Originally practiced in China, it made its way to Austria, then spread all over Europe, much of it in the western art of Switzerland and Germany where it was called "scherenschnitte." This is a particularly early example from England, a country where the art form only became popular in the 1720's. A wonderful cartoon executed for Herford of a cherubic angel in "Heaven" writing in the "Book of Life", playfully accusing Herford of not only not inscribing books to him, but of keeping them as well: "Oliver Herford neglected to autograph a book for Percy Crosby and even went so far as to keep books. Please look into this Jesus." The two were friends, and Herford wrote the introduction to Crosby's
