Hole-punched and a little chipped along the left margin, otherwsie fine. Scottish-born German composer D'Albert (1864-1932), referred to by Liszt as "the young Tausig," is remembered today for his piano concerti and pieces for solo piano. Typed letter signed.

The second work illustrated by Sauvage, he himself chose the text, in response to the publisher's request. He designed the covers, the frontispiece for the work and one for each chapter, head and tail pieces, and two-color initials. One of 942 numbered copies on Rives paper (of 1000).

Plates foxed, otherwise a near-fine copy. With the bookplate of George Brinley, (not the American collector) and an inscription to Edward H. Brinley, M.D. from his father, dated 1853. Edward Brinley graduated Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, in 1853. He later was on the faculty at Trinity College, Hartford. The brother of the great chemist Sir Humphrey Davy, whosen works he'd edited, in nine volumes, John Davy's researches here include the torpedo, poisonous snakes of Ceylon, the temperature of the insane, and many other topics.
