Oblong, 24.5 by 35 cm. A juvenile pastoral play, characters include a butterfly, a squirrel, a turtle and a deer. The little boy, Amer, is desperate to find a cure for his mother who is ill, and he enlists the aid of the animals, who show themselves to be self-centered and useless. Only the deer has suggestions, such as bringing a red flower from a distant field, all of which are thwarted by the instigation of the other animals. Finally, as the third tip, the deer tells him he should sheer the hair off of a sleeping bear. But the den he is sent to turns out to be the turtle's home. 1925-1929. Cloth. Very Good. A most unusual hand-made book. 8vo., 56 numbered leaves, plus acknowledgment page. Each leaf is written upon only on the recto side. What is most extraordinary about this album is that a high school student executed it with so much proficiency and dedication. While sketchbooks and artistic competence were far more prevalent then compared to now, this album is still a remarkable achievement for a youngster, and surely few of her contemporaries were so inspired by the English syllabus to attempt anything close to what we have here. The actual illustrations contained in this album are pleasing without being exceptional; it is the ornamentation, the borders and the calligraphy, that se this apart. These show an unusual sophistication for a adolescent, and they are applied not only tastefully, but also with a real panache. Unpaginated, 14 leaves, plus cover. Colorful illustrations throughout, sometimes full page, sometimes spilling over to a second page or two paged, sometimes overlapping text, all in the quintessential Hasegawa style. Light wear. A lovely copy overall.

London and New York: Eyre and Spottiswoode Limited and Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926 and 1928. First Edition (the first volume is the second impression, 1927). Decorated Cloth. Very Good Plus. Folio sized, measuring 14 by 10 inches, 35 by 26 cm. Each volume with sixteen color plates. "Sabretache" was a pseudonym adopted by the publicity-allergic C. Barrow, who served many years in the cavalry stationed in India and returning to England, was an ardent foxhunter. The two Shire volumes, which cover the history and lore of the most famous English hunts, constitute his best known works. Grimshaw 1288 and 1289. Both volumes are clean and tight internally, with the original clean cloth showing wear, with scuffs and the green rubbed out in spots.

These were sold on limited quantities, and at varying prices depending on the tranch in the limitation. Also an ad for "Shires and Provinces" by "Sabretache" and illustrated by Edwards. From this ad we know the catalogue is from 1926 or shortly thereafter.

New York, Washington, Hollywood: Vantage Pres, 1966. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Scarce, with only three copies found on OCLC. Oblong, 14 by 20.5 cm. Unpaginated, about 90 pages of satirical cartoons about the KKK and race relations. Some of the cartoons are ambiguous as to their intent, and not a few are most definitely anachronistic in their humor. Even when Edwards' intention might be to ridicule the Klan, by today's standards he falls afoul of not just today's standards of political correctness, but also today's norms of more widely accepted standards of taste. Not a few today would question the very notion of making light of the Klan the way Edwards does, and the racial stereotypes that he seems to accept and work off of. Nonetheless, this book offers insight into general societal attitudes towards race relations into the sixties and prior to the assassination of Martin Luther King and other upheaval that soon followed. Unusual comical promotion for 15 varied luxury businesses based in Lyon, including a watchmaker, a jeweler, a furrier, a florist, a shirtmaker, a couturier, an optician, a ceramist/glassmaker, a high-end shoe store, a handbag and glove business, a music store. For each, the business name, address and type are written on the cover of a folded sheet, accompanied by a cartoonish corner vignette, and then inside the folded sheet one comes upon a full-page cartoon with a jokey caption. 4to. 27.5 by 21.5 cm. 17 leaves, 15 of which are folded. (34 pages of mostly visual content, including the inside rear cover. Folded leaves have content on front and inside recto.) Gorgeous full mottled calf binding. Foxing, heavy-ish at times, on the text leaves.

Fine. 2 volumes with stunning Zaehnesdorf full red morocco bindings. 8vo. 23.5 by 15 cm. x, 656, ix, 668 pp. With 18 and 12 hand-colored plates, respectively, plus two hand-colored engraved title pages, for a total of 32 hand-colored plates. Abbey 280. A beautiful copy overall -- clean and fresh within, and a gorgeous binding, with a few very minor rub spots, and one tiny abrasion on the rear cover of the second volume.

Reading, PA: Johann Ritter und Comp. , 1834. 30th Edition (meaning, 34th yearly almanac). Wraps. Sticked, arguably no binding at all.. Fair. 8vo. 21 by 16.5 cm. 32 pp., including cover wraps. Woodcut of American eagle emblem and farmers sowing field before buildings that look more German than American. Opens with an adventure of Russian sailors who landed on a desert island in 1743. Other stories follow, interspersed between the usual almanac astronomical, horoscope and calendar info. Travel and exploration seems to have been a running theme in this particular almanac, with a story about a New Englander going to Guinea in Africa, etc. Also a few witticisms and health tips. Two strips of scotch tape appended to binding. Rough edges, with chewed corners. Chips on rear cover, with text in one corner hidden (but not lost) under tape. Heavy soiling and foxing.

Condition: Title plate is heavily soiled. Plates afterward are sometimes rough around their edges, with heavy soiling -- finger smudging, grime, etc. -- and some short close tearing now repaired.

Paris: Chez Bozérian. Chez Déterville. Didot Jeune, 1794. Full Calf. Very Good. Stunning color plates accompanying three works contained in this large paper edition. Folio, 33 by 25.5 cm. 153 pp. 12 color plates, including frontis, printed in color and finished by hand. Ten of these by Le Mire after Charles Eisen -- these relate to the principal work, "Le Temple de Gnide" and also "Céphise et lAmour". The two other plates are by Thomas after Le Barbier and these accompany "Arsace et Isménie". Scarce -- we could locate no other copies of the large paper edition, and only three of the regular issue, on OCLC First Search -- at the BNF, North Carolina, and Calouste Gulbenkan, in Portugal. The calf is polished, with gilt decoration of a band of Greek key and a rinceaux band within that one. On the spine the decoration includes a small hunt trophy motive and a bouquet in a basket, both of which are repeated. Condition: binding with some scuffs and scratching, and gilt border decoration slightly rubbed.

Accompanied by an inscription to Ralph Esmerian, "qui me fait l'honneur d'aimer mes dessins, et le plaisir de me le dire." No. 128 of 428, from tranch with paper of vélin de Rives. 4to. 26.5 by 19.5 cm. 179 pp. Pochoir plates, and pochoir illustrations at start of each chapter. Wraps with light soiling, closed tear by upper front joint, vertical crease lines on spine. Generally clean inside. Without original glassine.

Near Fine/Very Good. 4to. 29.5 by 22 cm. 40, [1] pp. Leaves are folded in the Japanese manner, giving the leaves a substantiality. In this, one of Walter Crane's most famous works, he freely draws upon the styles of dress from the Jacobean, Georgian, Regency periods, as well as those from a vague Medieval past -- court jesters, wizards, etc. -- such as one finds in fairy tales, some ball gowns more contemporary to him. The illustrations are a pageantry of color inspired by the work's fanciful progression of the calendar. This is a near exemplary copy of the work that was a part of the Forbes Magazine Collection (which was a privately owned museum gallery). A discrete impressed stamp identifies it as such and it may thus be technically considered ex-lib, although the provenance in this instance, combined with its lovely condition, would seem to enhance the copy. Tall 4to. 32.5 by 21 cm. Unpaginated. With 76 original or manuscript drawings in pen-and-ink and/or watercolor, 31 of these being maps, which here are always colored, the balance being drawings of equipment, weapons, etc. The logs detail the travels and activities aboard several ships -- the H.M.S. Prince George from January 1897 to June 1897; the H.M.S. Powerful from that June until July 1899; the H.M.S. Grafton from July 1899 until September 1899; the H.M.S. Magnificent from September 1899 until March 1900; and the H.M.S. Nautilus from March 1900 until July 1900.
