Opens flatly between gatherings with backing exposed between each, but binding is still holding. Occasional pencil marginalia, but text all legible. Prefatory note mentions the stereotyped plates of the original edition (1869) had been destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire, giving opportunity to revise and improve the current edition for wider circulation.
