[4], XCIX, [1] ll.Rare 1523 second (corrected) edition of Linacre's Latin translation of Galen's important medical treatise De sanitate tuenda, also known as Hygiene or On the preservation of health, first published at Paris in 1517 but here in the only other edition published during Linacre’s life, and rarer than the first edition. Although other works by Galen had been published as early as 1490, they were Latin editions based on Arabic translations. Linacre was the first to make a serious search for reliable Greek manuscripts of Galen’s works (those from Greek antiquity had been destroyed, so the best sources available were Byzantine transcriptions) and he began with the original Greek text of De sanitate tuenda. His much shorter account (26 leaves instead of 45 and without the folding tables) was also printed by the widow Ibarra, in 1795. Galiano was a pioneer of the use of the chronometer in Spain, allowing him to produce far more accurate maps of the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Galiano enrolled in the Spanish naval school in 1775. After graduating in 1779 he participated in hydrographic surveys of the Spanish and South American coasts and other Spanish naval scientific explorations.Joaquin Ibarra (1725-1785) had been printer to the court of King Carlos III and Spain's greatest printer, vying with Bodoni and the Didots as a fine printer. The dedication itself appears in volume 1 (1817), but is noted on all three title-pages (so also 1816). The present copy is in a beautiful armorial morocco binding clearly intended as a dedication copy for Marie Thérèse, with her arms on both boards of each volume. The author added his own description of Chios and of the marriage of Sultana Esma with Yakub Pasha, governor of Silistria. This 16th-century atlas was the first to use the Copernican coordinates for the locations of the stars. In six books, Gallucci provided his readers with a survey of terrestrial and celestial physics, beautifully illustrated with many woodcuts.Gallucci dedicated it to Pope Sixtus V, who had banned all astrological literature in 1586, trying to convince him to grant an astronomical observatory. Although Gallucci can’t resist reading some astrological implications into the constellations, he tried to write a pure astronomical treatise. It was the last of three major Portuguese expeditions to connect the Portuguese territories of Angola in the west with Mozambique in the east. The expedition, fitted out with only one instrument (a compass), suffered from poor planning and failed in its objective to establish trade contacts with the Kingdom of Kazambe (in present-day Zambia). However, Gamitto, second-in-command of the expedition, was an observant traveller with a genuine interest in the customs and traditions of the peoples he encountered, and his narrative records valuable ethnographic information on the Malawi, the Cewa and Tumbuka, the Bisa, the Lunda, and the Bemba. It discusses the Mahomedan religion in India, including their feasts and saints. Garcin de Tassy was a student of Silvestre de Sacy and became one of the founders and later even president of the Société Asiatique. He is known not only for his general works on Islam and Arabic, but particularly as one of the first and at least one of the most outstanding European scholars of Hindustani languages. He would become professor in Indology at the "École speciale des langues orientales vivantes" and published many books on Indian languages, especially Hindi and Hindustani. Unlike English skaters, who advocated a more straightforward approach, Garcin compared skating with dancing, stressing grace and artistry rather than technique and precision. It is dedicated to Mademoiselle Gosselin, principal dancer at the Académie Imperial de Musique. In 1872 he decided to travel to the high plateaus of central Asia by way of the valley of the Yangtze river. After a short stay at Beijing they went to Wuhan, where consul Blancheton advised them to take a more southern route, through the provinces of Hunan and Guizhou. When they reached the Tong-Ting (Dongting) lake, however, Garnier decided to explore the Yuan valley, because this area was hardly mapped by European geographers. Via the Wu river the party continued eastward. In August 1873 Garnier received a telegram which summoned him back to Shanghai as quickly as possible to take part in a war in Vietnam. He died during a fight close to Hanoi in December of the same year. This region became known as Al-Andalus, with Cordoba serving as its capital. In 756, Abd ar-Rahman I established the Emirate of Cordoba as an independent state. The present photo album covers in many photographs the magnificent architecture and features of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, which is considered one of the most significant architectural monuments of the western Islamic world. Built in 785, the mosque's most notable feature was its enormous hypostyle hall, comprised of rows of columns connected by double tiers of arches. The lower tier included horseshoe arches and was constructed with alternating red brick and light-colored stone. In 1689 Gaudereau went to Persia (Iran) in the company of Bégnine Vachet (1641-1720), a director of the seminary of foreign missions, arriving at Isfahan in 1690. After negotiating a military and commercial alliance between Persia and the French East India Company, Gaudereau started his travels back to Europe in 1703. In 1704 however, on his way from Trabzon to Constantinople, he got terribly ill and nearly died of an infectious disease. The author Amedeo Genesy was a lawyer and a professor of fruit growing at the Turin academy of agriculture. [16], 284, [36] pp.First and only edition of one of the first works on the discovery of the West Indies, written in 1524 but previously unpublished and now edited by the author's nephew Onofrio Geraldinus. The author, Alexander Geraldinus or Alessandro Geraldini (1455-1525), was the first Bishop of Santo Domingo and an intimate friend of Christopher Columbus. This work gives a detailed narrative of his voyage along the coast of Africa to Senegal and then to Santo Domingo. Some of the digressions appear to be fabrications, including the discovery of Roman inscriptions and antiquities in Ethiopia.A few copies are known to include 12 additional preliminary leaves, but these are not included in our copy or the copies described in Sabin and JCB, even though it does include the corresponding catchword.
