Description:
[4], XCIX, [1] ll.Rare 1523 second (corrected) edition of Linacre's Latin translation of Galen's important medical treatise De sanitate tuenda, also known as Hygiene or On the preservation of health, first published at Paris in 1517 but here in the only other edition published during Linacre’s life, and rarer than the first edition. Although other works by Galen had been published as early as 1490, they were Latin editions based on Arabic translations. Linacre was the first to make a serious search for reliable Greek manuscripts of Galen’s works (those from Greek antiquity had been destroyed, so the best sources available were Byzantine transcriptions) and he began with the original Greek text of De sanitate tuenda. Galen (129 - ca. 216?) was a Greek medical practitioner, historian, scientist and philosopher who became physician to the court of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and who exercised a dominant influence on medicine in Europe, the Byzantine world and the Middle East. [2], 87, [1] pp.Greatly expanded second edition of a treatise on the determination of latitude and longitude at sea, by Dionisio Alcalá Galiano (1760-1805), Spanish explorer, cartographer and captain in the Royal Spanish armada. His much shorter account (26 leaves instead of 45 and without the folding tables) was also printed by the widow Ibarra, in 1795. Galiano was a pioneer of the use of the chronometer in Spain, allowing him to produce far more accurate maps of the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Galiano enrolled in the Spanish naval school in 1775. After graduating in 1779 he participated in hydrographic surveys of the Spanish and South American coasts and other Spanish naval scientific explorations.Joaquin Ibarra (1725-1785) had been printer to the court of King Carlos III and Spain's greatest printer, vying with Bodoni and the Didots as a fine printer. His widow continued the tradition and upheld the quality of presswork and materials. The present book is well printed on fine Catalan laid… Read More

[4], 515, [1]; 552, [2]; 492, [2] pp.Very rare first and only edition of a compendious educational work intended for girls, dedicated (in the newly restored Bourbon monarchy) to Marie Thérèse de France (1778-1851), Duchesse d'Angoulême and daughter of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, the only heir directly descended from Louis XVI to survive the Revolution. The dedication itself appears in volume 1 (1817), but is noted on all three title-pages (so also 1816). The present copy is in a beautiful armorial morocco binding clearly intended as a dedication copy for Marie Thérèse, with her arms on both boards of each volume. She had married her first cousin Louis Antoine d'Artois (1775-1844), Duc d'Angoulême in 1799 (he was to be King of France for 20 minutes in 1830 when his father and he abdicated, then pretender to the throne, calling himself Louis XIX). His One thousand and one nights, first published from 1704 to 1717, contained the classic tales of Sinbad the sailor, Ali Baba and the forty thieves and Aladdin and his marvellous lamp. Not only was it the first translation of any part of the Thousand and one nights into any modern European language; it was the first published edition of any significant part of the work, which was not printed in Arabic until 1775, moreover the small bits that had been translated into Latin remained largely or wholly unpublished. [16], 478, [2] pp.First edition of Giovanni Paolo Gallucci’s Theatrum mundi, considered the first modern celestial atlas. This 16th-century atlas was the first to use the Copernican coordinates for the locations of the stars. In six books, Gallucci provided his readers with a survey of terrestrial and celestial physics, beautifully illustrated with many woodcuts.Gallucci dedicated it to Pope Sixtus V, who had banned all astrological literature in 1586, trying to convince him to grant an astronomical observatory. Although Gallucci can’t resist reading some astrological implications into the constellations, he tried to write a pure astronomical treatise. He discusses planets and their qualities, their radiation, the influence they exerted when in particular positions in the zodiac, and designates some zodiac signs masculine or feminine, commanding or obedient. He also added medical notes to his astronomical treatise, concerning the influence of constellations and the signs of the zodiac on the human… Read More

Description:
XXV, [1 blank], 501, [1 blank], [2] pp.First edition of this valuable narrative recording a trade mission to Kazembe IV. It was the last of three major Portuguese expeditions to connect the Portuguese territories of Angola in the west with Mozambique in the east. The expedition, fitted out with only one instrument (a compass), suffered from poor planning and failed in its objective to establish trade contacts with the Kingdom of Kazambe (in present-day Zambia). However, Gamitto, second-in-command of the expedition, was an observant traveller with a genuine interest in the customs and traditions of the peoples he encountered, and his narrative records valuable ethnographic information on the Malawi, the Cewa and Tumbuka, the Bisa, the Lunda, and the Bemba. Gamitto was the first to observe that the Malawi were matrilineal and described in full detail several technical processes and customs that have since disappeared. The fine plates show views, artefacts, and portraits, providing an excellent visual… Read More

Description:
[4], 108 pp.Highly interesting work on the particularities of the Islam in India according to Hindustani works by the influential French orientalist and specialist in India, Joseph Héliodore Garcin de Tassy (1794-1878). It discusses the Mahomedan religion in India, including their feasts and saints. Garcin de Tassy was a student of Silvestre de Sacy and became one of the founders and later even president of the Société Asiatique. He is known not only for his general works on Islam and Arabic, but particularly as one of the first and at least one of the most outstanding European scholars of Hindustani languages. He would become professor in Indology at the "École speciale des langues orientales vivantes" and published many books on Indian languages, especially Hindi and Hindustani. The present work, here in its second edition (first edition printed in 1831), is one of his major works in this field.Binding very slightly worn, endpapers a little browned, a few spots throughout, title and half-title a… Read More

Description:
XXIV, 93, [1 blank] pp.First edition of the first French ice-skating manual, describing many movements and poses with an emphasis on grace and form, illustrated with 8 engraved plates. Unlike English skaters, who advocated a more straightforward approach, Garcin compared skating with dancing, stressing grace and artistry rather than technique and precision. It is dedicated to Mademoiselle Gosselin, principal dancer at the Académie Imperial de Musique. One of the earliest separate works in any language devoted entirely to ice-skating.The printer, described only as Gillé fils, is better known as the typefounder and punchcutter Joseph-Gaspard Gillé, and the book therefore serves as a display of types that almost certainly come from his foundry. His father, also Joseph, was the leading French typefounder and punchcutter between Fournier and Didot, and Joseph-Gaspard produced some of the best types following the Didot style. He added a small printing office to the foundry ca. 1793. Among its few… Read More

Description:
[3], [1 blank], 39, [1 blank] pp.Offprint of an article on central China by the French explorer and diplomat Francis Garnier (1839-1873). In 1872 he decided to travel to the high plateaus of central Asia by way of the valley of the Yangtze river. After a short stay at Beijing they went to Wuhan, where consul Blancheton advised them to take a more southern route, through the provinces of Hunan and Guizhou. When they reached the Tong-Ting (Dongting) lake, however, Garnier decided to explore the Yuan valley, because this area was hardly mapped by European geographers. Via the Wu river the party continued eastward. In August 1873 Garnier received a telegram which summoned him back to Shanghai as quickly as possible to take part in a war in Vietnam. He died during a fight close to Hanoi in December of the same year. The large folding maps depicts central China with Garnier's route highlighted in red. Some foxing and marginal water stains, one tear along a fold of the map. [52] ll. interleaved with tissue paper. In 711, a Muslim army led by Tariq ibn Ziyad conquered most of the Iberian Peninsula, which was then part of the Visigothic Kingdom. This region became known as Al-Andalus, with Cordoba serving as its capital. In 756, Abd ar-Rahman I established the Emirate of Cordoba as an independent state. The present photo album covers in many photographs the magnificent architecture and features of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, which is considered one of the most significant architectural monuments of the western Islamic world. Built in 785, the mosque's most notable feature was its enormous hypostyle hall, comprised of rows of columns connected by double tiers of arches. The lower tier included horseshoe arches and was constructed with alternating red brick and light-colored stone. Abd ar-Rahman II expanded the mosque's dimensions in 836 while preserving its original design. His successors Muhammad, Al-Mundhir, and Abdallah also added new features to the mosque.
