Description:
London: Printed for E. and T. Williams, 1798. [8], 195pp, [1]. With a half-title. Contemporary gilt-ruled tree calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed. Internally clean and crisp. A rare English translation of a military manual, attributed to Frederick II, King of Prussia (1712-1785), translated by Edward Eyre, 'late captain in the 40th Regiment and Lieut. Col. in the Army'. Primarily designed for the use of cavalry officers 'in order to obtain both honor and fame in the campaign', the vade mecum provides, inter alia, instruction on how one is to act 'when he is sent to take prisoners', levelled 'against a detachment of Hussars equal to his own', or sent to attack a 'quarter of Hussars...during the night'. The Monthly Review (April 1799, p. 470) provides an interesting bibliographical detail: 'When Lieut. Col. Eyre, in August 1798, asserted this work to be 'now first translated into English,' he certainly was not aware that a… Read More

Description:
London: Hamilton, Adams and Co., 1879. v, 25pp. Stitched, as issued. Central vertical fold. A trifle dust-soiled, scattered foxing, ink-stamp of the Webster Collection to verso of final leaf. Presentation copy, inked inscription to head of title page: 'With the author's compliments'. The first edition, in original state, of two letters, initially printed in the Bradford Observer, by William Farrer Ecroyd (1827-1915). A worsted manufacturer by trade, Ecroyd was in the late 1870s severely impacted by foreign – and especially French - competition. As a result he became one of the more considered critics of free trade and an articulate exponent of the alternative principle of 'fair trade'. The present pamphlet argues that a British policy of free trade would only find success, and be met with reciprocity from other nations, if Britain were to impose duties on foreign imports, whilst at the same time allowing for free imports from the colonies (on the federal model of… Read More

Description:
London: J. Harris, 1805. 16 fully-engraved, unnumbered leaves, printed on one side only, comprising an engraved title page (on verso of first leaf), and 15 hand- coloured illustrated leaves with verse above pictures. Stitched, as issued, within original printed wrappers. Worn, with some loss and tearing to spine, occasional marking to text, creasing to margins and corners, with the odd tear. Old manuscript price inked to upper wrapper. A rare survival, in the original wrappers, of the first edition of a charming series of playful pictures illustrating a farcical verse narrative, the conceit of which involves a jig played by young Jack's fiddle, which is followed by an unfortunate series of events including an elderly gentleman having his wig stolen by a parrot. The whole, which references the popular Old Mother Hubbard series in its title, is a testament to publisher John Harris' intention to provide for the amusement, without overt educational improvement, of Georgian children. Description:
London: Printed for Tho. Cooper, 1740. [2], v-viii, 9-62pp. Without half-title. Recent marbled paper wrappers. Internally clean and crisp. An essay written during the early stages of the War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-1748), in which conflict between England and Spain mostly took place in the Caribbean sea. The author devotes a large portion of the essay to discussing the present military strength of France and Spain, which he deems inferior to the English forces, and argues that exerting English strength will be both profitable and inexpensive compared to the previous Anglo-Spanish war. Contains an appendix providing an interesting and detailed description of present Spanish territories in the Caribbean and Americas- including reference to the Spanish galleons and 'Mines of Gold, the most famous of which is St Maria'. Glasgow: Printed for Richard Griffin & Co., 1826. iv, 184, 4pp. With an engraved frontispiece and two final leaves of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's green printed paper boards, recently expertly rebacked. Inked gift inscription to FFEP, lightly spotted. A rare survival of the sole edition of an anonymous juvenile conduct of life tale promoting Christian morality and discipline. The prose is unremarkable, and on the whole a poor imitation of contemporary publications of this type, nevertheless despite, or perhaps because of this, the publisher’s introductory remarks are effusive in their praise: ‘In the following little piece, the author has endeavoured to point out the pernicious consequences of improper indulgence; as this is the error most likely to mingle with the affection which actuates the breast of a Parent, its baneful effects cannot be too cautiously guarded against’.
