Page edges moderately foxed otherwise fine. In very good to near fine dust jacket with light soiling, touch of rubbing and few tiny tears.

New York: New Yorker, 1948. First edition. First appearance of Jackson's best-known story, "The Lottery," the publication of which prompted hundreds of letters and subscription cancellations from outraged readers. Collected the following year in the book of the same name. Good to very good in pictorial paperwraps with staining to top edge front cover affecting top edge first two pages, small chip to upper rear cover, staples showing rusting, and innermost leaf detached but present. Quite scarce.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Co., 1948. First edition. Her first book. Loosely based on her childhood in an affluent California neighborhood. Very good to near fine with the usual darkening of the pages (due to the high pulp paper used during and after WWII), small tear near hinge of half-title page mended with archival tape on verso, hint of sticker shadow on verso front endpaper, and two small damp stains to page edges not extending to pages. Spine and covers quite bright and fine. In very good or better dust jacket with few tiny chips, internal archival-tape mends to two thumb-nail tears (spine and front flap fold), and spine and flap edges a bit tanned. From the collection of sports writer Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman with his penciled notations on rear endpaper.

Dallas, TX: Kaleidograph Press, (1940). First edition. A Poet Laureate and prize-winning poet herself, Jacobsen's poetry was praised by Nobel Prize-winning poet Joseph Brodsky for its "reserve, stoic timbre, and its high precision." Near fine in very good to near fine dust jacket with shallow chipping to spine ends and corners and spine just slightly tanned. Still, a quite attractive copy of her SCARCE FIRST BOOK.

Los Angeles: Black Sparrow Press, 1975. First edition. Short, offbeat stories illustrated with drawings by David Bromige. Number Number 24 of 200 numbered copies SIGNED BY JAFFE (of 226 total). Lower corners gently bumped still fine in original acetate.

Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, 1894. Third edition. Gilt page edges, decorations and lettering. Near fine with offset on endpapers.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1903. First U.S. edition of the novel James considered to be his best. Differs somewhat from the UK edition. Very good to near fine with corners lightly bumped, board visible at upper front corner (just a tiny spot), and first and last few leaves faintly foxed; in very good to near fine blue cloth-over-paper dust jacket with minor soiling to rear panel and just a touch of light edge rubbing. Still, quite attractive.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1917. First edition. An almost very good copy with spine and edges sunned, inscription on front endpaper, offset on endpapers and title page, light foxing and newspaper clippings affixed to back endpaper and pastedown.

New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1948. First edition. Edited and with an introduction by Allan Wade. Light rubbing to spine ends and tips, otherwise fine in dust jacket with slightly soiled spine and spine lettering faded (barely legible).

London: Macmillan and Co., 1883. First edition, first issue in primary binding of blue-green smooth cloth with "JAMES" in uniform letters on spine. 1,000 copies. Precedes the American edition. Light scattered foxing, boards rubbed on corners and a few light spots, back hinge starting to crack, small thin strip of cloth tape on copyright page and front endpaper (covering something?), otherwise very good.

Early, or perhaps the first, poetry selection from the writer, author, singer/songwriter, and professional treasure hunter known for his "Buried Treasures of America" series. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1954. First edition. His only novel. Uncorrected proof in blue, printed paperwraps labeled "Advance Copy" at top. About very good with covers somewhat soiled, spine slightly tanned and crease and tear to top edge rear cover. Newsclipping with notice of his death from the NY Times laid in noting his death to have been a presumed suicide and quoting him as saying, "The public has an unusual relationship to the poet, it doesn't even know that he is there.

New York: Knopf, 1954. First edition. SIGNED BY JARRELL on front endpaper. 8vo emerald-green boards with blind-stamped front and gilt-lettered spine, top edge pale orange, 277 pages. Spine slightly toned with gilt a bit dulled but readable, otherwise very good in about very good dust jacket with rubbing to edges and folds, small chips to spine ends, corners nicked, and orange spine blocking toned to gray but spine still bright. Relatively scarce signed.

(Hamden): Archon Books/Shoe String Press, 1981. First edition. Collection of 30 poems -- including the first appearance of 16 poems. Edited and with an introduction and commentary by Robert Ian Scott, who explains "Jeffers's motivation in writing, and why he chose not to publish these poems" (from the jacket flap). Near fine with bookplate of collector Allen K. Mears on front endpaper; in near fine dust jacket with slight toning to spine and edges.

(San Francisco: Grabhorn-Hoyem, 1941 [circa 1970]). First edition thus: issued as a New Year's greeting from Irving W. Robbins. Number 7 in "The Americana Series." 15 x 23" leaf folded twice to make four 7.5 x 11.5" pages, including covers; printed in black and red. Jeffers' poem originally appeared with slight variations as "Only an Hour" in TWO CONSOLATIONS in 1940. According to Broomfield [A45d] although the Grabhorn Press bibliography states 200 copies printed, per a note from Andrew Hoyem, there were no more than 100 copies. Fine. Quite scarce.

New York: Random House, 1931. First edition. ONE OF 50 SIGNED COPIES DESIGNATED FOR REVIEW, issued in addition to and, one would assume, prior to the 500 copies in the regular signed/limited issue (Broomfield A14[1]). Publisher's review slip laid in with projected publication date December 7, 1931. SIGNED BY JEFFERS on limitation page with "Review" written in black ink (in place of a number). Quarto cinnamon Tokugawa paper over flexible boards with vellum spine lettered in black. Broomfield doesn't call for a slipcase on copies sent for review but there is one present with this copy, though it's too tight as well as slightly shorter than usually seen and is subsequently split at the top. The book is near fine with only mild aging to spine; the slipcase is split at top, as noted, but otherwise near fine.
