The first Elzevir edition (printed in the year after the original edition published by Thomas Jolly at Paris), of a curious work, commonly attributed to French philosopher, philologist, and historian François de La Mothe Le Vayer (1588- 1672), that revels in obscenity and mockery. Description:
Leith: Printed for the Author, and sold by James Burnet, 1815. xii, 181pp, [1]. With half-title. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards. Worn, with rubbing and loss to spine, boards and extremities, cracking to joints (boards holding strong). Marbled endpapers with early Warwick bookseller's label. A rare collection of poetry by an anonymous Leith 'young lady', attributed in this copy (by Eric Quayle) to Mary Panton. Dedicated to Lady Anne Johnstone Hope, included are 'Lines on reading the Life and Poems of H.K. White' and ten sonnets. Apart from the Leith imprint, there is much to belie the Leith imprint: the list of subscribers is surprisingly English in nature; and indeed, as the British Critic noted with characteristic English pomp, 'the language is not alloyed with unintelligible Scotticisms'. COPAC locates copies at BL, Oxford, NLS and St. Andrews only, OCLC adds copies at Kansas, Miami and Oakland. Not in Jackson. Jackson, Romantic poetry by women p.387. Not in… Read More

London: Printed for the Author, 1810. vi, 150pp. Later gilt-tooled red half-roan, green paper boards. Heavily rubbed, chipping to head and foot of spine. Hinges exposed, scattered spotting, head of leaf D6 torn away - touching text with slight loss of sense. The second known copy of the first edition of a grammar 'formed upon a New Plan' to facilitate 'the acquisition of the Spanish language'. The majority of the example phrases provided for the practice of students are taken from 'the best Spanish authors' (though uncredited), and include numerous references to the deeds of Cortez in South America, and, rather unsurprisingly, a plethora of extracts from Don Quixote: 'One of them gave D. Q. such a blow on the shoulder, on the sword side, the poor D. Q. came to the ground in a very unpleasant state'. A second edition was published in the same year as the first, a third and final 'new edition' appeared in 1824. OCLC records a single copy of the first edition… Read More

London: Edward Moxon, 1836. [4], 340pp. Without half-title. [Uniformly bound with:] LAMB, Charles. Elia. Second series. London. Edward Moxon, 1836. New edition, xiii, [3], 295pp, [1]. With half-title. 8vo. Handsomely bound in later burgundy half-morocco, marbled boards, gilt. Slightest of rubbing to extremities. Bookplates of Robert J. Hayhurst to both FEPs, very small holes to margins of leaves E2-3 of Vol. I, very occasional marginal ink annotations, sporadic spotting. An attractive paring of both series of the collected essays of Charles Lamb (1775-1834). First published in book form in 1823 and 1833 respectively, the essays had initially appeared in John Scott's London Magazine between 1820 and 1825 under the pseudonym of Elia. Lamb drew upon his own experience and correspondence for the pieces, his dramatic persona allowing for the representation of a more naive and whimsical take on contemporary events. . New edition.
