In Dangerous Luck, David Makow brings into focus the profound questions as to whether a person's life unfolds by his own volition, circumstances, fate, or luck.
A teenager when the Nazi war machine rolled into his native Poland, he survived on his wits and his ability to make quick decisions that turned out to be the correct ones.
His first fortunate decision was made as the German army approached the city of Lodz, where he lived. Those who left were strafed mercilessly by German aircraft on the road to Warsaw. Another lucky decision was to move to the interior of Poland just before the Lodz ghetto was established.
In 1942, when the Holocaust began, he made his most amazing choice. Instead of trying to get as far as he… Read More

[THICK VOLUME may require extra shipping charges]From MacMillan publisher: Kellen Tavadon, son of the Arch-Mage Lycaelon, thought he knew the way the world worked. His father, leading the wise and benevolent Council of Mages, protected and guided the citizens of the Golden City of the Bells. Young Mages in training--all men, for women were unfit to practice magic--memorized the intricate details of High Magic and aspired to seats on the council. Then he found the forbidden Books of Wild Magic--or did they find him? The three slim volumes woke Kellen to the wide world outside the City's isolating walls. Their Magic was not dead, strangled by rules and regulations. It felt like a living thing, guided by the hearts…

356 p. Mild page curl and minor shelfwear, otherwise Near Fine. Winner of the Man Booker Prize. From the back: After the tragic sinking of a cargo ship, one solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild, blue Pacific. The crew of the surviving vessel consists of a hyena, an orang-utan, a zebra with a broken leg, a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger and Pi Patel, a 16-year-old Indian boy. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary pieces of literary fiction of recent years, a novel of such rare and wondrous storytelling that it may, as one character claims, make you believe in God. Presumably first edition. 152 p. Mild shelfwear, otherwise Fine. From the rear: "The rapidly unreeling dream (or nightmare) of each of these stories—stories of drifters, hookers, highway victims, corporate spies and con-men, dead-- beat dads and the heartbroken—comes at us from off-kilter angles that are wholly the author's own. His imagination is bold and unbreaking, his instinct for the aptest detail is sure-fire. Here is an unignorable debut." - Steven Heighton, author of the bestselling novel The Shadow Boxer "Rife with the blackest humour, quirky, unadorned, Oscar Martens' stories are full of characters on a collision course with each other and with the world. In the resulting aftermath, we gain this original new voice, this dark, edgy satirist of the human condition." - Nadine McInnis, author of the acclaimed Quicksilver Tapping into the voyeuristic human compulsion that attracts us to the dirty little secrets of people's lives, Oscar Martens' stories peel back layers of contemporary…

First edition, first printing. 216 p.; ill. Very minor shelf wear, and a small initial in pen to upper corner of half-title, otherwise Fine.
From the back:
Norman "Red" Ryan was a notorious bank robber, safecracker, and killer. He escaped from Kingston Penitentiary twice—first by force, and then years later by gulling the credulous into believing that he was "reformed." Ryan's second emancipation included the prison's Roman Catholic chaplain, several nationally prominent citizens, the country's largest newspaper, and, ultimately, R. B. Bennett, the prime minister of Canada, who made the mistake of arranging a "political parole" for Ryan.
Six people—three of them innocent victims—died as a result of Red Ryan's freedom. Dubbed "the Jesse James of Canada" and "Canada's most notorious criminal," Ryan had compiled a record of nineteen convictions for crimes of theft and violence, and had been in nine shooting affrays with police and citizens. He was a "lifer" in an arrow when "life" meant just… Read More

From inside/back: Perhaps the greatest Italian artist of the twentieth century, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) created a number of memorable paintings during the last five years of his life that revealed an intriguing distortion of form and a sensitive use of color. Modigliani was an individualist whose paintings couldn't be categorized into any art movement. He was, however, influenced by Fauvism, Cubism, and African art. His artwork consists of portraits and nudes with simple forms and lines—many of them with elongated faces. To use the stickers, simple peel and apply.
