Full colourphoto book, with portraits of models / every day people wearing uniforms and clothes from WW2. Re-enactors heralded a return to documentary portraiture for Naughten, using post-production techniques to create a powerful collusion with its subjects and composite images that blend landscapes with action scenes. Boards have slight handling as light coloured, but inside is spotless and appears unread. Unpaginated. 285 x 235 mm (11¼ x 9¼ inches).

Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1876. An attractive copy of what is "probably the masterpiece of Gustave Doré" (Adhémar). Three quarter burgundy leather. Gilt titles and decorations to the spine. In good, strong condition, but the leather is somewhat darkened. A little rubbing to the edge of the boards. Marbled end papers. A touch of foxing to the initial pages. The rest of the work is in good condition but with sporadic foxing throughout. The first edition was published in London in 1872 under the title "London, a Pilgrimage." Illustrated with 174 woodcuts based on the drawings of Gustave Doré including 52 full-page compositions. 434 pages. 375 by 290mm (14¾ by 11½ inches). . The Hague: Servire Press, 1932. First Edition. Hardback in dust jacket. Orangey yellow boards with grey cloth spine. Top edge with publisher's blue stain. Authors and poets included range from Ernest Hemingway to Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams to Gertrude Stein, and many more. This would be the first appearance of Henry Miller in a book. The dust jacket is fragile and has some tears and small losses to the edges, and spine of dust jacket has a split, but now protected by a clear wrap. The book is very clean and tidy both inside and out with no markings. Prelims are age toned, but clean. Overall a good copy. xi, 475 pp. 235 x 165 mm (9¼ x 6½ inches).

Some fading to the spine of the dust jacket, and lightly rubbed corners. Internally the book is very clean and tidy. Lt. Colonel Airey Middleton Sheffield Neave, OBE, DSO, MC, TD (23 January 1916 – 30 March 1979) was a British army officer, barrister, politician, and author. He was Margaret Thatcher's 'right hand man' until his shocking assassination in 1979. During World War II, Neave was the first British officer to successfully escape from the German prisoner-of-war camp at Colditz Castle. For his wartime service, in 1948 the United States conferred the Bronze Star Medal upon him.

The book must be read one way for one story, then turned upside down and read the other way for the second story. Decorated red boards. Page edges and endpapers are red. Wonderful colour illustrations. 64 pages. 190 x 140 mm (7½ x 5½ inches). Illustrated by John R. Neill, Known for His Illustrations of L. Frank Baum's OZ Books. No dust jacket. The boards are a little rubbed, particularly to spine head and tail. Overall a very good example of the earliest edition. The illustrations were first serialised by the Philadelphia North American Syndicate in Sunday supplements as "Children's Stories That Never Grow Old," September 1, 1907 to March 22, 1908. Some marking to the boards and rubbing to the edges. fraying to the top and bottom of the spine cloth. Front board is cracked but still holding. Inside, the pages are sound, but with some finger stains to them. Amusing children's verses and colour illustrations. 66 pages. 315 x 255 mm (12½ x 10 inches).

London: Raphael Tuck & Son, 1900. First edition. Unusual oval shaped lithographed covers - depicting a straw hat, some flowers, straw and a sickle. A good example. Comprising ten poems, each with a charming illustration on the facing page, and a vignette border. Front cover was most likely once detached, but has been very nicely repaired. Signs of a crease on front, now flat and neat. Undated. Circa 1900. 215 x 160 mm (8½ x 6¼ inches).

Paris: E.P.A. Hachette, 2005. First Edition thus (French edition). A retrospective of Helmut Newton's work, showing his theatrical / cinematic approach to portraiture. The book and dust wrapper are both almost as new, with just a fractional handling. No significant marks or wear. Perhaps our imagination, but the dust wrapper and matching boards seem to have a much darker, golden tone than the US edition. Although the introduction and other text is in French - this hardly matters, as this book is all about the photography. The binding has been restored with a cloth backstrip, and reinforced to the front and rear hinge inside as well. A little rubbing to the edges of the boards, with some slight chipping. Inside, the pages and plates are in very nice condition, with just a little of darkening to the text pages. 12 colour plates, title and a further 10 leaves of text, including a final leaf with a facsimile of a hand written poem by Henley. Adverts to rear. 340 by 290mm (13½ by 11½ inches). In this first edition, the bus driver only appears on the front board, not as a plate inside. Illustrations include the Guardsman, Hawker, Beef-Eater, Sandwich-Man, Coster, Lady, Bluecoat Boy, Policeman, Newsboy, Drum-Major, Flower Girl, Barmaid, each with the London location they are to be found in.

Colour illustrated boards, dust jacket, and story line - all Jan Pieńkowski illustrations. The adventures of the witch Meg, her cat Mog, and their friend Owl, as they get shipwrecked on an island and have to be rescued. Book boards, unclipped dust jacket and contents all in very good clean condition. Unpaginated. 210 x 210 mm (8¼ x 8¼ inches).

Paris: Librairie Delagrave, 1881. A attractive copy of this first edition work of political caricature. 32 full page illustrated plates (including the title) 8 of them in colour. There is a further colour plate tipped onto the front board. The boards are clean, with a little darkening / foxing to the plate. Some rubbing with surface loss to the rear panel. Internally mostly clean and tidy. The title page has some darkening / dirt, and there are a few light foxing spots, but overall in very good condition. The end papers and paste downs are possibly renewed, so some restoration may have occurred. Hardback in red buckram, with gilt title and decoration to front board and spine. Boards are slightly darkened and lightly soiled. Inside FFEP has a neat ink hand written prize dedication from a Protestant church in North Holland. Tiny portion of top right corner of the end paper has been neatly cut out. Newcastle Upon Tyne: Andrew Reid, 1885. Scarce. First Edition. Previously published as articles in the 'Consett Guardian'. Copac lists only two holdings - Newcastle and Oxford. Disbound, but the text block is complete and holding well (Has more the appearance of a tract). Has some age toning, and spots of foxing. Concise biographies of characters such as the "Father of Railways" George Stephenson, former Prime Minister Earl Grey, engineer and industrialist William George Armstrong (1st Baron Armstrong), Victorian ironmaster Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell, and others. 160 pages. 185 x 125 mm (7¼ x 5 inches).

Versaille, 1900. A fascinating sketchbook by the artist and portraitist Henri de Nolhac (1884-1948). He was the son of Pierre de Nolhac, the curator of the Palace of Versailles Museum during his youth. From a young age, he was a painter, and particularly skilled in pencil portraits, which he used to make his living. This sketchbook, with a cloth spine and plain blue boards, seems to have begun life as an itinerary book / plan for his father. A note on the front end paper "2e Division 1er Brigade" and to the final page "Cours special d'instruction 3e Brigade (1890-91)" is followed by seven pages in ink, dated 1890-1891 in an adult hand. This seems to be largely assigning projects (or elements of the instruction course). As the text ends, the pencil sketches immediately begin. It is unlikely that Henri took up this book immediately, as in 1890 he was only 7 years old and these are mature sketches.
