(THE RAPE OF NANKING). The Rape of Nanking, also known as the Nanking Massacre, was a period of mass murder, wartime rape, arson, and looting. It was conducted by the Imperial Japanese Army during their occupation of Nanking, the capital of the Republic of China. The Rape of Nanking began with the fall of Nanking on December 13th, 1937, during the Second Sino-Japanese War and lasted for a few months afterwards until the Germany-established Nanking Safety Zone succeeded in preventing further war crimes by demilitarizing the city. Death toll estimates vary from 40,000 to over 300,000, with rape cases ranging from 20,000 to over 80,000 cases. However, most credible scholars in Japan support the validity of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and its findings, which estimate at least 200,000 murders and at least 20,000 cases of rape. SIEGFRIED NEUMANN. Neumann was appointed Veterinary Surgeon-General of the United States Army during the Civil War. ALS. 1pg. Valentine’s Day, 1864. Headquarter Cavalry Depot, Department Washington D.C. An autograph letter signed “Siegfried Neumann”. During the Civil War, Neumann wrote an affectionate Valentine’s Day message to his wife back home in Newark, New Jersey. “My dear Elisabeth Though we should dwell far, far apart and Rivers between us roll I still thou shall swell within my heart And light my inmost soul And you shall be my proudest prize and ne’er forgot shall be Yes while the Star of life doth rise I will remember thee. Hoping to hear from you soon I am your affectionate Husband Siegfried Neumann”. Neumann attached a lock of his hair just below the signature. The letter is in very good condition with toning; it include the original mailing envelope that is in good condition.

HARRY S. NEW (1858-1937). New was a Senator and Postmaster General. PS. 8” x 10”. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed “Harry S. New” as Postmaster General. The black-and-white photo depicts New, wearing a luxurious fur coat, outside in the snow with the blurry image of a black dog next to him. New appears to be tapping a tree for syrup. “To Harry Vantine with the best wishes of his friend, the Postmaster General Harry S. New”. New seems to have also signed as his dog in the lower right corner. The photo is in fair condition, with several chips.

DS. 2pg. 8” x 12 ½”. July 30, 1801. Newport. A deed for land in Newport’s Easton’s Point signed by five early landholders, “Richard Mitchell”, “Benjamin Mott”, “Saml. Thurston”, “Benjamin Hadwen” and “Clke Rodman”; it is also autographed by “Job Thomas” and “Jonathan Almy” as witnesses. The five of them were “Proprietors of a Tract of Land situated in Newport aforesaid on the point called Easton’s Point, for and in consideration of the Sum of Forty Six Dollars and thirty one cents, to us in hand paid by James Finch, of Newport, aforesaid, Mariner…to one lot of land situate in Newport aforesaid…bounded Eaterly on Washington Street fifty feet, and extending Westerly…”. The document is in very good condition with extensive professional repairs to the folds. The signatures are dark, and five of them have red wax seals next to the autographs.

DS. 4pgs. 7 ½” x 12”. December 1875. Somerset County, New Jersey. A contract for the sale of a Somerset County, New Jersey newspaper, signed “C J Wilson”, “D. W. Wilson” and “V.D. Honeyman”. The contract sates, in part: “In consideration of one dollar to us in hand paid, and for the further consideration to be made as hereafter specified, we, Charles J .Wilson, editor and publisher of the ‘Somerset Gazette’, a newspaper printed and published in Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey, and David W. Wilson, who has an interest therein, do agree to sell and convey and do hereby sell, convey, transfer and assign unto a van Daren Honeyman, of the same place, all our right, title, interest, ownership and possession of in and to said newspaper, and its appurtenances, with all its appliances, machinery, tools, and materials, presses, type cases, forms, stencils, frames, inks and stock of paper on hand, being everything whatsoever which is now in the office occupied by said ‘Somerset… Read More

ALS. Nicholson was a Revolutionary-era Pennsylvania state official. He partnered with Robert Morris in western land speculation that bankrupted both. He was sent to debtor's prison in 1800 and died there shortly thereafter. ADS. 1pg. 8 ¾" x 8. Jany 21, 1783. Comptr Generals Office Phiada. A very rare autograph document signed "Jno Nicholson": "Capt Joseph Blewer Esqr acknowledges to have recd the sum of four thousand five hundred and eighty five pounds and Six pence of Samuel Massey Esqr. at the time and for the purpose Mentd. within which he had borrowed of Sd. Massey as, he declares upon Interest, he also produces a copy of his accts. Current wherein he charges himself and accts. for the expenditure of the sum aforesaid... £1000 were pd by his draft on the navy board in fav of I Hood." On the back are numbers totaling £4585.6 all in the handwriting of Joseph Blewer. SIR HAROLD NICOLSON (1886-1968). Nicolson was a British writer and politician. TLS. 1pg. 8 x 10. November 8, 1948. Kensington, London. A typed letter signed “Harold Nicolson”. Nicolson responds to a Mr. Brockway, who had previously written to request quotations to include in his planned dictionary. “Dear Mr. Brockway, I was rather alarmed by your letter of October 19th inviting me to select quotations for your dictionary. I find that my more serious books do not lend themselves to quotation since they are concerned with analysis and narrative rather than with epigrams. I have, however, looked through some of my lighter books and give you a specimen herein. Yours sincerely, Harold Nicolson”. The letter is in very good condition with a central fold and a tiny tear in the upper edge.

CHESTER W. NIMITZ (1885-1966). Nimitz was Fleet Admiral of the United States Navy and a major Allied Naval Commander during World War Two. TDS. 1pg. 5 ¼” x 3 ¼”. February 18, 1952. N.p. A typed document signed “C.W. Nimitz Fleet Admiral USN”. “I (will not) be able to attend the meeting of the Board, 23 February 1952. I designate, Col. J. W. Moreau, Lt. Col. Wm. P. McCahill, Lt. Cmdr. Alan Brown, or ___ as my proxy. Signed C.W. Nimitz Fleet Admiral USN”. Although Nimitz had retired in 1947, he retained the rank of Fleet Admiral for life. It is in fine condition.

A typed letter signed “C. W. Nimitz” on United Nations letterhead, with a small autograph addition. Nimitz wrote concerning the Marine Corps War Memorial Foundation: “Dear Moreau: I thank you for your letter of September 25th with its enclosures descriptive of the material and methods which the Marine Corps of the Marine Corps War Memorial Foundation is using in its initial efforts to obtain funds. I am in complete accord with this plan and wish that I could be of more assistance. It distresses me to realize that I have not even attended meetings of the Board of Directors. Best wishes Sincerely yours, C.W. Nimitz Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy”. Although Nimitz had retired in 1947, he retained the rank of Fleet Admiral for life. It is in very good condition with two file holes and a loss to the upper-left corner.

CHESTER NIMITZ (1885-1966). Five-star Fleet Admiral Nimitz was a World War Two hero. He was the Commander in Chief of American and Allied fleets in the Pacific during the war, and he was Commander in Chief of Naval Operations after the war. Nimitz was an expert on submarines and was instrumental in the advent of the nuclear submarine. PS. 15 ½ x 17”. 20 November 1960. No place. An enormous color photograph signed “C.W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, USN”. It was inscribed “To Joe and Clarisse Knowland with best wishes and great affection”. The color portrait shows the old sailor with his hand on a sundial with trees in the background. There is a slight curl to the lower left corner and the inscription and signature are a tad light, but the huge photograph is a stunning display item.

TLS. 1pg. 6 ¼” x 9 ½”. February 12, 1969. The White House. A typed letter signed “Pat” to Katharine McGuire just weeks after becoming First Lady: “I shall be most happy to have my name listed as an honorary sponsor of the annual House and Embassy Tour on March twenty-ninth. It will be a pleasure for me to be associated in this limited way with one of the most important programs of the Board of Managers of the Washington Home for Incurables”. Perkins McGuire served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Eisenhower, and was later appointed by President Nixon to be Chairman of the Commission on Government Procurement. The letter is on “The White House” letterhead and is in fine condition with two mailing folds.

TLS. 1pg. 6 ¾” x 9”. July 22, 1969. Washington, DC. A typed letter signed “RN” as President to E. Perkins McGuire, affectionately referred to as “Perk:” “Before departing on our round-the-world trip, I wanted you to know that Pat and I are both pleased to learn that you are progressing rapidly since your recent hospitalization and that you are now back at your desk on a part-time basis. This is good news indeed. Although there is always a tendency to overdo, and taking it easy is sometimes the hardest advice to follow, I hope you’re abiding by your doctor’s orders and following a more relaxed schedule during your period of recuperation.” Perkins served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Eisenhower, and was appointed by Nixon to be Chairman of the Commission on Government Procurement. Typed just two days after the Apollo 11 Moon landing on White House letterhead, the letter is in very fine condition.

RICHARD NIXON (1913-1994). Nixon was the Thirty-Seventh President. LEWIS STRAUSS (1896-1974). Strauss was an American businessman and an influential member of the Atomic Energy Commission. A champion of the hydrogen bomb, he greatly influenced both Truman’s and Eisenhower’s nuclear policies. TLS. 1pg. 6 ¾” x 9”. November 29, 1972. The White House. A typed letter signed “RN” as President. He wrote to the Jewish admiral Lewis Strauss at the George Washington University Hospital: “Pat and I were deeply saddened to learn that you are in the hospital, and we just want to let you know that you have our hopes and prayers for a quick return to better health. Needless to say, we will be thinking of you in the days ahead and looking forward to the good news that you are fully recovered. As always, our warmest regards to you and Alice.” The letter has a central mailing fold, an embossed Presidential seal at the top, and two small staple holes. The condition is fine.

RICHARD NIXON (1913-1994). Nixon was the Thirty-Seventh President. SB. 384pg. No date. Yorba Linda. In The Arena signed “Richard Nixon” on a Presidential book plate that has been attached to the first free endpage. The book is in very fine condition.

TLS. 1pg. 7 ¼” x 10”. June 1, 1968. New York, NY. A typed letter signed “Dick” to E. Perkins McGuire, affectionately referred to as “Perk:” “This is just a note to congratulate you on your election as a delegate to our National Convention in Miami Beach. Your work on behalf of the Republican Party in Washington makes it most fitting that you should have the responsibility to help select the man who will be the next President of the United States. As one who has served as a delegate, I know that in the weeks before the convention you will probably be inundated by the mass material you will receive from the prospective candidates and their supporters. I do not want to add to your burden in that regard, but I would like to take the liberty of sending you, under separate cover, some of the statements I have made on the major issues during the campaign. RICHARD NIXON (1913-1994). Nixon was the 37th President from 1969 to 1974. SB. 1120pg. No date. No place. The Memoirs Of Richard Nixon inscribed “To William Schneiderman with best wishes from Richard Nixon” on the title page. The interior pages are in fine condition. The dust jacket has a clipped price and some wear, especially to the spine.

KENNETH NOLAND (1924-2010). Noland was a prominent American abstract painter of the Color Field painting tradition. Signed postcard. 1976. N.p. A postcard depicting Kenneth Noland’s 1963 painting Purple in the Shadow of Red, signed “Kenneth Noland 1976” on the upper margin. The painting in question is at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The postcard is in fine condition.

TLS. 1pg. 8 ½” x 11”. October 2, 1939. Framingham, Massachusetts. A typed letter signed “Wallace Nutting” on his decorative letterhead. He wrote to Mrs. Frederick Delavan about an order of furniture: “The chest of drawers with the quarter and fluted columns is $130. Without the fluted columns, otherwise the same, it is $104 in mahogany. In maple it is $98. All the brasses are hand made, about $12 worth of brasses alone. The size is 37” high, 38” long and 19” deep at the top. We have a smaller one block front and very exquisite and dainty 30” high, 35” long and 30” deep at the top. The price on that is also $130. We have a Sheraton turned leg piece about the size of the former quoted at $60.” The letter is in fine condition with mailing folds, a large signature and a small stain near the lower margin.
