GILBERT PARKER (1862-1932). Sir Gilbert Parker, a Canadian novelist and poet, served in Parliament. He is best remembered for his novels set in Canada, such as The Seats of the Mighty, The Power and the Glory and When Valmond Came to Pontiac. A typed letter signed “Gilbert Parker” on “Carleton House Terrace” letterhead. He wrote to Dr. Edward O. RICHMOND PEARSON HOBSON (1870-1937). Hobson was an admiral in the United States Navy and a congressman representing Alabama from 1905 to 1915. Throughout his tenure as a congressman he worked to expand the naval power of the United States. In 1933 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in the Spanish-American War. ALS. 2pg. 4 ½” x 7”. May 21, 1902. Washington. An autograph letter signed “Richmond Pearson Hobson” on “The Army and Navy Club” letterhead. He wrote to Mrs. Heywood: “Thank you very much for your note and for the catalogue that have duly reached me. I have examined the plans and think they are admirable. You are to be congratulated on having entered your boy whether he wishes to go into the navy or not.” The letter is in fine condition except for a fold separation along the second page that affects the closing, but not the signature.

(EGYPTIAN PENPAL LETTERS). An archive of a dozen letters from a young Egyptian, Hassan Hafez Adb el Bari, to an American woman named Ruth O’Donnell. They range from 1938 to 1946 and state in part: ALS. 2pg. 7” x 9”. August 25, 1938. Cairo. An autograph letter signed “Hassan Hafez Abd el Bari”: “…On November 14 I shall be sixteen years of age. Schools in Egypt are: four years in primary schools; 5 years in secondary schools (high schools); after that the pupil goes in any faculty which he prefers…Our family had spent this summer in our farm but I spent it in Cairo…”. Stock. (1828-1902). Perot was active in founding The Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia, the first medical college in the world for women. He was also the President of the Mercantile Library Company. 1871, Philadelphia. A Mercantile Library Company stock certificate for 1 share, signed by “T. Morris Perot” as President and “Jno. H. Watt” as Treasurer. The uncancelled stock is in extremely fine condition and has a fine central engraving of the Mercantile Library building. A fine Philadelphia stock.

JOHN J. PERSHING (1860-1948). Pershing was Commander of American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. PS. N.d. N.p. A black-and-white photograph of John J. Pershing on horseback, signed “John J. Pershing”. He inscribed it to Lieutenant General R. Perry below the horse’s feet. The photograph is in very good condition, though the blue ink is slightly faded; it is mounted to a slightly larger board.

JOHN J. PERSHING (1860-1948). A United States Army General, Pershing was commander of American Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front during World War I. He was given the rare title General of the Armies. PS. 1pg. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed “John J. Persing”. Cut from a book, the black-and-white photograph depicts Pershing with his Marine escort at a Bastille Day even in Chaumont, France in 1918. The caption printed below the photo explains the significance of the photograph in terms of Pershing’s relationship with the Marines. Pershing signed the bottom of the image in blue ink. In fine condition, with an uneven left edge – probably where the image was removed from the rest of the book.

RICHARD PETTY (1937- ). Petty, a NASCAR driver nicknamed The King, was the first racer to win the NASCAR Cup Championship seven times. PS. 7” x 5”. No date. No place. A colorful postcard signed “Richard Petty” with the most elaborate sports signature. It shows Petty kneeling before his Dodge Charger. It is in fine condition.

(WORLD WAR II IN THE PHILIPPINES). ALS. 3pg. 6” x 10 ½”. June 6, 1945. Philippine Islands. An autograph letter signed “Claude”, an American GI stationed in the Philippines. He wrote on “United States Army” stationery to his friend John about fighting the Japanese: “Dear John, Was sure glad to hear from you again Thanks for writing. A lot has happened since I last wrote - but I won't bore you with very much of them - Have seen quite a bit of action. Mostly fighting n razor back mountains either covered with grass or off on another part of the island covered with jungle - It seemed we moved from one land to another - such a change in terrain - I mean like thick jungles vines & dampness at one place, & the other so open, one could see for miles and miles - even watch the japs digging in miles away with our binoculars. WILLIAM PHILLIPS (1731-1781). Phillips was a British Army officer who served in the American Revolution. Phillips was part of the Convention Army of British and British-allied soldiers who became prisoners of war after General John Burgoyne’s surrender in 1777. WILLIAM HEATH (1737-1814). A Revolutionary War general from Massachusetts, Heath fought at Bunker Hill. In January 1777, Heath, with 6,000 troops, so bungled the attack on Fort Independence in New York, garrisoned by 2,000 troops, that Washington reprimanded him. He was placed in command of the Eastern district stationed in Boston. LS. 1pg. April 22, 1778. Cambridge, [Massachusetts]. A letter signed “W Phillips” written while an American prisoner of war as part of the Convention Army. (TEXAS). Photo archive. 27 pieces. Early 1900s. Texas. An archive of twenty-seven black-and-white photographs of life in Texas, including eight relating to the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900. Those images mainly show building damage after the storm. Other subjects include people, horseback riding, trains, town centers, and local industry. One image is hand-dated April 1912 in Fort Worth. The photographs are quite sharp for the most part. They are in very good condition, with minor toning, chipping, and curling.

(FLOGGING PHOTOGRAPHS). Archive. No date [circa 1910s]. No place [likely a place in the Pacific, perhaps the Philippines]. An archive of images showing corporal punishment for natives. Some of the men are bound and hooded, and some images show multiple lashings across their backs. There are sixteen photographs attached to three independent pages (they were probably removed from a larger album). Five photographs are hand-colored and the remainder are black and white. Two images show white men in Western dress, suggesting occupation. There are also a couple photographs of bamboo walls and grass huts, suggesting the South Pacific. A disturbing collection.

(PRESIDENT KENNEDY FUNERAL). An archive of 25 black and white photographs of President John F. Kennedy’s funeral on November 25, 1963. The photographs begin with a gathering of people and soldiers outside the Capitol, show the funeral procession to Arlington, the carrying of his coffin to his grave, the ceremony around his grave, and the post-funeral. The photographer is unknown, but he or she had a relatively good position, including being near the burial; Robert Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy can be seen from behind. Each image is 8” x 10” and is in very fine condition.

EDMUND PHYSICK (1727-1804). Physick was a British-born businessman and prominent citizen of Revolutionary War-era Philadelphia. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society. DS. 1pg. September 9, 1772. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A handwritten document signed “Edmund Physick”. Physick acknowledged the receipt of money from John Pollock for 100 acres of land. “Received of John Pollock the sum of Eight pounds Curr. Money of Pennsylvania, in lieu of Five pounds 2.9 for 100 Ar of Land to be survey’d to him adjacent Land of Eleanor Pollock & others on the west Branch of Chillisquaque North C. granted to him by Wh yesterday For the Hon the Prop Edmund Physick”. The document is in very good condition with professional repairs on the verso. The edges are worn, and there is a stain in the lower left corner that does not affect any text.

TIMOTHY PICKERING (1745-1829). Pickering was the third United States Secretary of State under Presidents George Washington and John Adams between 1795 to 1800. He had previously served as United States Postmaster General and Secretary of War. He later represented Massachusetts in both houses of Congress as a member of the Federalist Party. DAVID LENOX (1753-1828). Lenox served in the Revolutionary War and later became a successful merchant, Federal marshal during the Whiskey Rebellion, diplomat, and banker in Philadelphia. ALS. 2 pg. 8” x 10”. January 2, 1800. Philadelphia. An autograph letter signed “Timothy Pickering” to “David Lenox Esqr.”: “By your last private letter (of July 15, 1799) it is manifest that mine to which it refers was considered by you as containing only empty professions: and you intimate a contradiction between that and a former letter, on the subject of your salary. He had previously served as United States Postmaster General and Secretary of War. He later represented Massachusetts in both houses of Congress as a member of the Federalist Party. ADS. 8” x 4”. January 22, 1783. N.p. An autographed document signed in the third person: “Received of Timy Pickering…One hundred and thirteen dollars and fifteen nintieths in full fraye rations & due last year as paid, having signed duplicates”. The receipt is signed at the conclusion by “W Barber Major & Asst Infy…”. He is most likely Major William Barber, who served as a New Jersey major and aide-de-camp during the American Revolution. GIFFORD PINCHOT (1865-1946). Pinchot was an American forester and politician. He was the first Head of the United States Forest Service and a two-time Governor of Pennsylvania. TLS. 2pgs. October 18, 1928. Milford Pike County, Pennsylvania. A typed letter signed “Gifford Pinchot”. On his personal letterhead, Pinchot wrote to the manager of the Easton Car & Construction Company, trying to persuade him to vote in favor of a proposed Pennsylvania bond issue for the purchase of forest lands: “…As a businessman you undoubtedly realize that no industry can be carried on without wood…We Pennsylvanians are in genuine danger of having this essential resource fail us. As a nation we are using five or six times as much wood as we are growing. As a State we put more timber yearly into the anthracite mines alone that the whole of Pennsylvania produces.
