Throughout his tenure as a congressman he worked to expand the naval power of the United States. In 1933 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in the Spanish-American War. ALS. 2pg. 4 ½” x 7”. May 21, 1902. Washington. An autograph letter signed “Richmond Pearson Hobson” on “The Army and Navy Club” letterhead. He wrote to Mrs. Heywood: “Thank you very much for your note and for the catalogue that have duly reached me. I have examined the plans and think they are admirable. You are to be congratulated on having entered your boy whether he wishes to go into the navy or not.” The letter is in fine condition except for a fold separation along the second page that affects the closing, but not the signature.

He was given the rare title General of the Armies. PS. 1pg. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed “John J. Persing”. Cut from a book, the black-and-white photograph depicts Pershing with his Marine escort at a Bastille Day even in Chaumont, France in 1918. The caption printed below the photo explains the significance of the photograph in terms of Pershing’s relationship with the Marines. Pershing signed the bottom of the image in blue ink. In fine condition, with an uneven left edge – probably where the image was removed from the rest of the book.

Two images show white men in Western dress, suggesting occupation. There are also a couple photographs of bamboo walls and grass huts, suggesting the South Pacific. A disturbing collection.
