London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1911. First Edition, Fifth Impression Fifth Printing. Leather. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Very attractive tree calf binding. Four gilt-decorated, raised bands to spine with gilt decoration and leather gilt title label to compartments. Prize binding from Clifton College, Bristol, with their insignia in gilt to upper board, and 1916 prize label to front pastedown. Pretty gilt borders to both boards, blind-stamped turn-ins, marbled endpapers and page edges. Ribbon bookmarker present but detached. Minor wear to binding. Joints a little rubbed but firm, and hinges intact. A few minor marks to marbled page edges. Minor spotting to front and back matter and a couple of marked pages but contents o/w clean. A lovely copy. Text mostly printed in two columns per page. viii, 647 pp. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Additional photos available on request. Vol. II retains its morocco title label but I and III are left with only the imprint of theirs. Rubbing to spine, joints, edges and corners; a little fading. Hinges cracked in Vols. I and III. Marbled paper boards with light wear. Marbled page edges and plain endpapers. Armorial bookplate of John Buchanan-Hamilton, Laird of Leny, Scotland, to front pastedown of Vol. I and his signature to each ffep. A few very minor marks and spots to front and back matter but contents o/w clean without inscriptions, foxing or other markings. No date or imprint but believed to have been published c.1845-1850. 1845 is written in pencil to the title page and could be correct. Attractive binding of red morocco leather with five raised bands to spine, ornate gilt decoration to boards and spine, and gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. The luxurious binding is somewhat rubbed and marked; the joints are worn but holding; the gilt page edges are lightly dust-soiled. Gift inscription and signatures to feps with what looks like a date of 1891. Another signature to verso of portrait frontispiece. In between, there is a page missing, presumably the half-title.
