Description:
Londres [i.e. London]: [s.n.], 1774. In two volumes. vii, [1], 232; [4], 280pp. With half-titles. The imprint is false; printed on the continent. Uncut in later blue paper wrappers, paper labels with title in manuscript to spines. Rubbed, creased, and a trifle marked. Short tear to foot of Vol. II title page. A primary work of political theory by French Enlightenment polymath Paul Henri Thiry, baron d'Holbach (1723-1789), in which he argues for principles of government based solely on social utility. Holbach promotes the abolition of hereditary class privileges, progressive taxation, separation of church and state, religious toleration, the establishment of a system of secular public education, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech. The failure of a government to provide general welfare, he argues, citizens come to be ruled not by reason but by passion, and revolution results. ESTC T199913.. Second edition. 8vo.
