An Act published in Public General Acts 1744-1745, enacting an amnesty for those who have engaged in the activity of smuggling and laying out punishments for those who continue to partake in the crime (transportation or death). The statutes of 1745 are considered to be the leading statutes for smuggling law in eighteenth-century England, as they made the greatest effort to convict offenders and to sentence those convicted to death. These statutes, part of the 'Bloody Code', further extended the means by which a person could be convicted for smuggling and put to death without benefit of clergy, although other lesser penalties, most notably transportation, remained the… Read More

Woodcut coat of arms to the title page, decorative woodcut initial to the first text page, text in black letter. A very good copy with just a little toning, slight separation and minor wear to the left-hand margin where once bound within a larger volume. An act restoring Ireland's ability to export goods directly to the colonies in the Americas and Africa, issued in the context of the American Revolutionary War, and amending what became known as the Navigation Acts. Restricting the freedoms of Britain's colonies with regard to the import and export of goods, the Navigation Acts had been a significant factor in fermenting rebellious discontent in America - requiring all of a colony's imports to be either bought from Britain or resold by British merchants in Britain, regardless of the price obtainable elsewhere. The acts were also resented in Ireland and damaged its economy, as they… Read More

[c.1813-1820]. Octavo. Contemporary half roan over marbled boards. Blue card endpapers. The contents comprising 21 proof engravings by John Romney after both his own drawings as well as works by other artists including Richard Westall, Henry Corbould, and Thomas Stothard, mounted on tabs and interleaved with thick blank paper leaves. Most of the engravings are captioned in pencil at the foot in a contemporary hand. The binding is somewhat fragile with both boards held by cords only and with wear and rubbing to the boards. The contents with varying scattered foxing (heavy to some plates, with others completely clean) are otherwise in good order. A curious bound collection of proof engravings by the English printmaker John Romney (1785-1863). Born in Chester, Romney spent much of his life in the city, although also lived and worked in London for a period. Amongst his more noted engravings were his 200 or so views produced for Augustus Pugin's 'Paris and its Environs' (1839-31), as well as his… Read More
