[Philadelphia and New York: Danforth, Bald & Co., c.1850-1853]. Engraving. 3⅝ x 11⅝ inches. Translucent bank note paper. Two vignette illustrations; certificate and accompanying stub are blank; binder's stab holes visible in left margin. Intact 19th-century certificate of deposit from the Bank of Wilmington and Brandywine in Wilmington, Delaware. The certificate was engraved by Danforth, Bald. & Co. and includes two patriotic vignettes: an American sailor in uniform, arm resting on a capstan, and a merchant ship in full-sail, the Flag of the United States unfurled. Interestingly, it retains its original engraved stub for recording the details of the certificate's transaction. An excellent example. Ref.
