An apparently unrecorded, provincially published edition of this popular East-Anglian morality tale on guardianship, which appeared from the late sixteenth-century as a broadside production and was variously published, in slip sheet and chapbook form, as The Norfolk gentleman's last will and testament, The affecting history of the children in the wood, and The Babes in the Wood in the intervening years. Little is known of publisher J. Rosewarne beyond his birth in Wirksworth, a record of his time as a teacher in the Belper Wesley Sunday school, his succession of the Bridge Street premises of printer and bookseller Mr. Ogle, and, bizarrely, his weakness for toffee (Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, Vol. XII, February, 1890). . 8vo.

The last published work of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) before his death in exile in November of 1900. The Anglo-Irish poet and playwright, remembered as one of high society's greatest wits, suffered a criminal conviction for gross indecency and was subsequently sentenced to two years hard labour - the bulk of which was served at Reading Gaol. . 8vo.

The work of clergyman and wit Sydney Smith (1771-1845), Ballot is an eloquent and humorous series of arguments in defence of open voting. Despite continuing to claim whig sympathies, Smith became increasingly conservative during the late 1830s. He contended that one should be prepared to stand up for ones political beliefs, and that it is incorrect to 'seek for liberty by clothing ourselves in the mask of falsehood, and trampling on the cross of truth'. Following an overwhelmingly positive reception, Smith's brother Bobus said of Ballot; 'Since the days of Pascal no such piece of Irony, involving so much wisdom, had ever been penned'. . The sole edition, limited to 40 copies, of a celebratory ballad commemorating the 1824 meeting of the Bannatyne Club by co-founder, historian and advocate, Patrick Fraser Tytler (1791-1849). The Bannatyne Club was founded in Edinburgh in 1823, with Sir Walter Scott as first president, for the purpose of promoting the study of Scottish history and literature. The club was named in honour of George Bannatyne (1545-1607/8), compiler of the Bannatyne manuscript (1568), an anthology of Scottish poetry. The club was dissolved in 1861. . First edition. 8vo.
