Augusta, Maine: Printed at the Office of the Kennebec Journal, 1865. Softcover. Good. 12mo pamphlet, stitched as issued with original printed wrappers. 34, [1]pp. This guide provides detailed information on National Banks that were originally chartered by individual states. By converting to National Banks, these financial institutions were required to surrender their state charters, thereby raising questions about their original bills of exchange and when they must be redeemed. An interesting glimpse of the uncertainty and confusion in the banking system immediately following the Civil War. Although microform copies of this pamphlet are held by a number of research libraries, physical copies of the original are rare. Wrappers have ink spots with scattered foxing to text. A good + copy.

Publisher's light green cloth binding with decorations and lettering stamped in "Dutch gold" on the spine. Abstract pattern blindstamped on boards with pale yellow endpapers. A very nice copy of a late 1850's binding. Gift inscription on front free endpaper, dated Dec 25th / 57. Occasional light foxing to text with very minor wear to boards.

Good. Two folded handwritten manuscripts, signed by Elijah Cutter, reflecting the services performed by Cutter as a blacksmith for two customers between 1818 and 1823 along with his record of payment. One manuscript is 7 5/8" x 10 1/4" and records activity for the period Jan 1822 to Feb 1823. The other is 7 5/8" x 12 1/2" and records activity for the period Dec 1818 to Mar 1822. Elijah Cutter (1788 - 1885) was a blacksmith by trade in West Cambridge -- now Arlington -- Massachusetts. He was married in 1818, and he and his wife subsequently produced 8 children. As a blacksmith, he performed a number of services for customers, which are documented here. Tears appearing at the fold or crease lines. Although fragile, text is still readable.

Boston: John P. Jewett & Co, (1852). Hardcover. Very good. 24mo. (8 cm x 13 cm). 180pp followed by an additional 10pp of ads. Fold-out engraved map as frontispiece (27 cm x 25 cm). Recto shows the railroad and telegraph lines for all New England. Verso shows street map of Boston. Original publisher's green cloth binding with blindstamped decorations on boards. Front board also has lettering and decoration stamped in gold. Endpapers and two additional leaves at front and rear in glossy blue paper with gilt printing. This includes a number of engraved illustrations of Boston area churches. A few ink spots on binding and spots on edges; page 93 shows evidence of minor tape repair. Otherwise, the binding is tight and the extremities show little or no wear. Overall, a very good copy.

Goshen, N.Y: Charles Mead & Son, 1866. Softcover. Very good. Pamphlet (5 1/2" 8 1/2"), stitched as issued. 23pp. Original salmon-colored wrappers with printing on front wrapper. This pamphlet contains the by-laws of the Orange County Medical Society along with a code of ethics for its members (including agreed minimum charges for certain procedures). It also contains a section of over 8 pages entitled "Laws of the State of New York Relative to the Medical Profession". An interesting and scarce summary of the regulatory environment for physicians in the mid 19th century. Worldcat can find no US library holdings for this title. Contemporary owner's signature ("Dr. G. Sears") at the top of front wrapper with a correction in ink on page 7. Light soiling to wrappers. Otherwise, a good + or better copy.

Pamphlet (4 1/8" x 6 7/8"), stitched as issued with original blue-grey paper wrappers. 14, [2] pp. including a list of members from 1805 to 1825 printed on 2 pages plus contemporary handwritten annotations on membership status and names of new members subsequently added. Not in Shaw & Shoemaker. These by-laws include a description of the number of officers, their duties and function, the various committees, the process of accepting new members, the form of the correct uniform and the rules of order. There is also a list of members admitted from 1805 to 1825. Uncommon. Worldcat shows no holding of this item in U. S. libraries. Dampstain to upper right corners but otherwise very good.
