London and New York: William Heinemann; Dodd, Mead & Company, 1917 A good copy in the original decorative cloth binding illustrated by Jean de Bosschere. This was an early commission for de Bosschere, a Belgian illustrator who has been compared to Aubrey Beardsley. Contents with decorative tinted title page; 12 colour plates, 11 tinted full page plates, 14 full page black and white plates and numerous illustrations and designs in the text. The cloth binding has a bright clean front board with black designs and titles. The decorative spine is lightly faded and the plain back board has some discolouration. There is some slight fading at the top of the front board and light wear to the top and bottom of the spine and to corners. Internally the decorative endpapers are present - the rear ones have a little marking. There is a pencil note about purchase history in 1972 to the verso of the fep. The set is complete in itself with 136 black and white and 4 colour plates. The series was issued in 3 formats and this is the rarer quarto version. The volumes have been rebound in maroon buckram cloth with gilt titles to spine and 'Foyle' printed at the spine base. The bindings are clean and bright with general light wear to spine ends and some darkened areas to the spines. Vol 1 of the set has bumping to bottom corners and turning to the top corners. London: Whittaker and Co, 1834 A good copy of the 10th volume in the Griffith edition of 'The Animal Kingdom arranged in conformity with its Organization by the Baron Cuvier', which is complete in itself. The Griffith edition has particularly fine detailed plates which are black and white in most copies, and occasionally in colour. This copy has 64 black and white plates. The page format is unusually large - 25.9cm x 20 cm. It has been rebound at some point in maroon buckram cloth with gilt titles and the name Foyle to the spine. There is some darker marking to the spine; some rubbing to edges and joints and the corner wear. The rebinding has unfortunately attached the series title page to the front endpaper at the gutter and has done the same with the rear endpaper and the final leaf. The stitching is visible two leaves in at the front and one leaf back at the rear. However, the binding is sound and clean. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816 A very good 3 volume set in part contemporary half leather binding with 240 plates of which 237 are hand coloured. Duppa (1770-1831) was draughtsman and writer who authored a wide range of works. The bindings have newer spines with raised bands and author and title labels. The boards are marbled and retain their original corners. The spines have become sunned but are sound; corners and edges with wear and varying degrees of surface loss. The books do not lie completely flat when opened. Internally the endpapers are marbled matching the boards. They have the bookplate of Gloria Rollinson. London: Whittaker, Treacher, and Co., 1833 A very good copy of the Royal 8vo edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 60 hand coloured plates. Part of Edward Griffith's major work on Cuvier's Animal Kingdom, but complete as a single volume. The series was a very expensive production, with this volume costing £3 12s 0d in 1833. As a result it is very scarce. The binding has a paper label to spine and is clean and sound, although there are a couple of places internally where the stitching is wobbly (pp 162 and 304). There is some pulling to spine ends and the corners have wear with some turning and bumping. Board surfaces slightly scuffed. Contents: half title; series title; volume title; plate list; Annelida pp 1-130 with 8 plates; Crustacea pp 131-382 with 25 plates; Arachnida pp 383-533 with 27 plates; alphabetical listing pp 535-540. London: Herbert Jenkins Limited A very good copy in the original sage green cloth binding with black titles and a black scene on the front board. Undated, but the list of titles opposite the title page has 12 entries and Ukridge is the final one, suggesting a date circa 1924. The wrap is later, with Summer Lightning and Very Good, Jeeves priced at 7/6 on the front flap suggesting a 1930 date. The binding is bright and clean. There is a very slight warp to the front board and light wear to spine ends and corners. There is spotting to the foredge and top and bottom page edges. Pages are lightly toned but clean. There is a small signature at the top of the front endpaper; bottom page corner creases at pp 99 and 101; and a couple of small ink marks at the side of p 225. The wrap is complete, and has 2/6 on the spine. The spine is darkened and both panels are a little grubby with more grubbiness at the folds. Lomdon: R Ware, C Hitch, J Hodges, 1745 A very good copy in large contemporary full leather binding with frontispiece portrait of Edward Cocker. This copy is the revised edition 'carefully corrected and amended' by George Fisher in 1677. The binding has contemporary boards with a newer spine with gilt lines and title label. There is some scuffing and wear to the boards. Internally there is a pencil note to the front pastedown endpaper and a loose note at the rear by William Ridler, a bookseller in London circa 1877 - 1904. Contents: advert with portrait to verso; title; to the Reader (verso of title); Edward Cocker's Proem 2pp; note to the Reader 1677; table of contents; text pp 1-183 with advert at the rear. There is some mispagination: pp 69-71-70; and 160-163-162-163 - both with continuous text. London: Chatto & Windus, 1945 A very good copy of Bettina's first work in good wrapper. The yellow binding has a title and the outline of a donkey in red on the front board. It is in very good clean condition with some browning to the bottom edges and light turning to corners. The contents are very clean and sound. There is slight spotting to the verso of the fep and a slight bubble to the paper on the rear pastedown endpaper. The wrap is complete and clean with wear to folds and some browning to the spine. There are some edge nibbles and small edge tears at the top edge repaired with archive tape.

Tolosae [Toulouse]: Apud Arnaldum Colomerium, Regis, & Academiae Tolosanae Typographum, 1648 A very rare copy of a city pharmacopoeia in possibly contemporary loose vellum wrap. The Pharmaceutical profession was subject to strict regulations from its earliest origins. Reference or formula books were required, guarded, and handed down. In 17th and 18th century France, major cities published their own pharmacopoeia, with 'official' authority. This is the Toulouse pharmacopoiea authored by Pontio Francisco Purpan. It is missing the title page but the contents look otherwise complete with: 3 blank leaves (one looks bright and may have been added at some point); frontispiece by Stuerhelt, with banner 'Dant Sydera Vires'; Dedication by Purpan, 2pp; full page engraving by Stuerhelt; letter by Purpan to a series of nobles 4pp (there is a very well repaired paper tear to the first leaf of the letter); Extract des Registres de Parlement 1p; Catalogue 1p; Lectori 1p; Index Capitum 1p; Codicis… Read More

London: Edward Arnold & Co, 1931 A very good copy of the first collected edition of M R James Ghost Stories in the original black cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. The binding is very bright and clean. There are small scuffs on the boards visible at some angles, and light pulling to spine ends. There is a tiny paler spot on the spine. Corners with slight wear. Internally the book is in near fine clean condition. There is a pencil ownership signature to the top of the fep. Both sets of endpapers have some tiny foxing spots around the gutter. There are some faint toned areas in the bottom margin of pp 3-6.

London: John Nichols, 1790 This is part of the material gathered by John Nichols for his outstanding 4 volume work The History of Leicestershire. There are numerous different collations for this work, with some sections available separately. This volume consists of the complete Collections Towards the History and Antiquities of the Town and County of Leicester - with title page - it starts at page 421 to 592. Pages 1 to 426 (there is an overlap) are the History of Hinckley and The History of Aston Flamville which are not present. Pages 593 to 609 is Mr Carte's Account of Leicester. This is followed by lists of the Abbots if St Marys, Deans of Newark College leading in to Additional Collections for Leicestershire complete to page 1486. The book finishes with an index to page 1508. There is a lot of misnumbering but it is the complete Leicester Section. Superb condition with 52 plates and 3 maps. In fine full leather binding, ex-Libris Trevor Hickman who has published many books on Leicestershire.

London : Printed by J Davis [Vols I & II] and B Wilks [Vol III] for the Author, 1798 A very good copy of the complete 3 volume 1st edition including later Supplement, with 440 hand coloured plates on 436 leaves. This work was James Sowerby's follow up to his successful English Botany and he both drew, and engraved the plates and oversaw the colouring. He immersed himself in the study of mushrooms over the period of work, which was published between 1798 and 1809, including creating 200 models of larger species, and making his collection of specimens available to public view. In his introduction to the Supplement (which was issued without separate title) he states his concern that the identification of many individual species, with illustrations that focus only on perfect specimens, might confuse the public into eating poisonous fungi. His response was to illustrate a number of specimens rather than the 'perfect one' and to model a number of poisonous species for public inspection. This… Read More

London: Willis and Sotheran, 1857 A good set in contemporary rebacked cloth bindings with 322 colour plates of birds, 102 colour plates of eggs and 8 black and white plates. The original cloth was probably a shade of green but it has sunned. It has been rebacked in a dark green relaying the original gilt-decorated spines which are mostly complete. The bindings are therefore sound and tight but there is a lot of wear to corners with varying degrees of bumping, corner turning, fraying and loss of cloth. Newer marbled endpapers have been added and each volume has an armorial bookplate of K I Beynon to the front pastedown, with the motto 'Gwell Dysg Na Golud' (the original motto of Llandovery College). Internally the volumes are complete and the plates are well-coloured. All the title pages have a small ink signature of Spencer Nicholl to the top. London: Printed by J G for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham at the signe of the Bear in St Paul's Church-yard, 1654 A good copy in contemporary full pigskin with blind ruled lines to boards. The pages have been cropped so the margins and gutter are quite small and the book is slightly bowed as if it has been held or kept in a pocket for ease of reference. It is certainly an entertaining read. Thomas Hall (circa 1610-1665) was a Presbyterian and, at the time of publication, was Pastor of Kingsnorton. His congregation dismissed him at the Restoration - and if his sermons resembled his writing, it is easy to imagine why. A small sample: 'Lastly, as no man may weare his owne haire excessively long, so he may not weare the long haire of another, be it of a man, a woman, or it may be of some harlot, who is now in Hell, lamenting there the abuse of that excrement'. This title is part of a series of relatively cheap and affordable books covering natural history that people might see on a day out/on holiday. Other titles in the series include Common Objects of the Sea Shore, and Common Objects of the Microscope. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine. New endpapers have been added. The binding is clean, tight and sound. There are a few lightly faded areas on the front board and the corners are turned. The top back corner is bumped. Contents are complete with frontispiece and 11 further tissue-guarded plates. 6 page publisher's catalogue at the rear. Contents are generally clean with the odd spot or mark. There is a small stain in the top gutter which affects preliminaries through to p 1 of text.

Robinson; J Sewell; Cadell and Davies; W Creech; and J Archer, 1797 A good to very good set of 4 volumes in contemporary quarter leather with marbled boards. Packed with articles, letters and notes on developments in agriculture, estate management, roads and vehicles in Britain and elsewhere at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Numerous plates of estate plans, machinery, cottage styles, boundary styles etc. Interesting to note that this is contemporary with Jane Austen and provides a detailed background to the management of the great estates and the roads and means of transport referred to in her work. London : J and J Bonwicke, R Wilkin, S Birt, T Ward and E Wicksteed, 1737 A very good copy of the third English edition in new half calf binding with marbled boards. When Pierre Pomet first published the work in France in 1684, a wealth of discoveries were being made through voyages to tropical regions. This book was the first to look at the new products - whether plant, animal or mineral being made available for european use. It was translated into English in 1712 and became a handbook for apothecaries. Pierre Pomet (1658-1699) had a practice in Paris as well his position as Chief Druggist to Louis XIV. The binding has raised bands with gilt lines to spine and a red title label. It is in fine condition. The pastedown endpapers have been replaced and there is the signature of Sarah Mainwaring to the fep. The title page also has her signature, crossed out, at the top. London : Printed by John Darby for Richard Chiswell, and Robert Clavell, 1669 A very good copy of the 1st edition of Johann Shroder's work in English, translated by William Rowland. An extremely scarce work. Johann Shroder (1600-1664) was a German physician and pharmacologist and is credited as the first person to recognise arsenic as an element - producing it by heating its oxide in 1649. This work was published in Latin in 1662. This copy has been recently rebound in half leather with marbled boards. The spine has gilt lined raised bands and titles. New endpapers have been added. Boston and New York: Colonial Press Company A scarce printing of Jane Austen's works in 12 volumes, undated but cited as 1906, with 30 colour plates by H M and C E Brock, 6 further illustrations and a folding facsimile autograph letter. In matching blue cloth bindings with paper labels which state that this edition is the 'Beacon Edition'. Top page edges gilt; remainder untrimmed. It uses some of the Brock plates from an earlier J M Dent/E P Dutton edition first published in 1898, and the prefaces are by Brimley Johnson, who edited that edition. However it also has a substantial introductory piece by Prof. William Lyon Phelps, which appears in the Frank S Holby publications. A fairly large type-face is used - reminiscent of the Winchester Edition. Book size 20 x 14.5 cms. The blue cloth bindings are generally sound and clean with the occasional light mark.
