Description:
9.5 x 12.25" brown and black string-bound scrapbook documenting the career of Dolores Peters. The folder is loosely filled with 10 stunning photos from Dolores' modeling and drama career; she appears to have modeled fur coats in some of the pictures, and others are taken from a vaudeville show that she was part of. An envelope contains a negative of Dolores showing her ballet moves. There is also a color sketch of Dolores based on one of her modeling shots from 1922. Photographs vary in size, but generally measure between 2.75 x 4.5" x 10.25 x 8," and all have wear, including chips and tape. The rest of the scrapbook contains newspaper clippings and programs related to shows that Dolores took part in, which mainly seems to have been the Greenwich Village Follies in the early 1920s. One of the clippings mentions that Dolores is the younger sister of singer George Peters and pianist Jessie Peters. There is a of B.F. Keith's Theatre News program and one from the Globe Theatre in Atlantic City. Some of… Read More

Description:
7.5" x 10.25" suede bound photo album with "Photographs on the cover. This early 1900s album belonged to Melvin Nicoll, who I believe was was born in Hawaii. Most of the photos inside appear to be from Hawaii, including a page of what seems to be well-known Hawaiians. There is also a larger photo of Queen's Hospital in Honolulu, and there are several photos of nurses throughout. There are 145 photos in total, which are of various sizes and glued to the page. Many of the photos are identified, though they can be amusing captions, and/or with names. Included in the album is a page of more recent notes, that looks to be written by a family member. Some of the notes refer to photos inside, including photos of Melvin who had an accident with crutches. The paper also notes that Melvin wento to California for more schooling in 1906 and stayed until 1911. The album was once bound by ribbon, which has disintegrated, otherwise it appears to be complete and a bit of a puzzle to figure out.

Description:
Lovely marble-covered notebook with a black spine measuring 7 x 8.25". The label on the front cover bears the name Mary Agnes Bushway, along with "Botany book." An internet search reveals that she was probably from Haverill, MA, where she graduated high school in 1908. The dates 1904 and 1908 both appear in the notebook. Within, Mary has written notes on plants, including information on an experiment with seedlings, roots, stems, the fern, the flower, the fruit, and miscellaneous notes. What makes this notebook so special are the carefully detailed illustrations and sketches that Mary has sprinkled throughout, often writing her notes around her artwork. She includes drawings of seeds, sketches of parts of a plant, as well as paintings of flowers such as poppy, jonquil, wild roses, blackeyed susan, sweet pea, iris, and lady's slipper. The notebook is about two thirds full, with a few empty pages between each new section of notes. Example note entry: The Root The primary roots originate from lower… Read More

Photos show King's Beach, Cove John Blaney, Cliff House, and Egg Rock Lighthouse, which seems to place the location in Maine. Later photos of an Aides Parade and Lynn Classical High are from Lynn, Mass. There are also photos of people sailing, a 1913 house party, and burned and damaged buildings from a Salem fire. The many people photographed are sometimes identified by name, including Ed March, Ed Herbert, George Moore, Fred Philipps, and Avelyn Blaney. Some of the men look to be Civil War Veterans. Photographs measure between 2 x 2.5" and 5 x 6.75" and are glued to the pages, accompanied by annotations. There are a couple of unused pages in the back, and the photos are lightly pasted to the page and some are a bit loose and some have corner bends. A few are missing, but the album is mostly full.

Description:
This 10.25 x 12.25" hardcover book was used for copying letters and practicing penmanship. The book begins with an alphabetical index used to write down letters, speeches, poems, and addresses written or copied by title. The pages are numbered and start at #56 and go to #486, with a little less than half used for copying and practicing handwriting. The pages are very thin, and as such the ink the writer used often shows through the other side of the page or bleeds through. There are also rips and tears, and unfortunately most of the pages have a particularly deep wrinkle or crease down the center of the page. Towards the end of the used pages there are newspaper clippings: one is a 1907 obituary for Edwin Bradbury Haskell, proprietor and former editor-in-chief of The Boston Herald; a 1916 obituary for Silas B. Haynes; and information about a surprise party for the 76th birthday of Charles P. Haynes. Some of the texts copied include one titled "Sambo Johnson's on Colored People's Baptism", which seems… Read More

Description:
8" x 12.25" photo album with a cover showing a soldier in combat and says, "USA Service Memories." There are 26 photos inside, including fifteen of actress Jane Wyman, and Edgar Bergen with his puppets Charlie McCarthy (dressed as a Marine in a few pics) and Mortimer Snerd visiting wounded Marines. The dealer I bought this from told me that is from Camp Pendleton California hospital in 1952, though I don't see that date or identification inside. The other photos show another group of unidentified actors, and photos of the men in action and at rest. Also included is a paper and cardboard Charlie McCarthy puppet that moves, though needs some restoration. All of the pages meant for photos are used, with one photo per page. Two photos are loose. There is no indication of who this belonged to.

Description:
11 x 8" brown suede string-bound album with a painted image of the Strathaird ocean liner on the cover, along with palm trees, clouds, and the ocean. On the inside cover there is a travel schedule and a map of the route from 1935. Contains around 144 black and white photos measuring between 2.25 x 2.25" and 6.25 x 4.5" which are pasted into the album and accompanied by incredibly neat handwritten captions. This trip took passengers to Ceuta, Malta, Alexandria, Cairo, Port Said, Rhodes, Athens, Palermo, and Corunna. For the most part the photos are of notable landmarks, especially gardens. There are gorgeous photos of the Pyramid of Giza as seen from the Mena House Hotel in Cairo, the Sphinx, the Step pyramid of Djoser in Sakkara, the Acropolis of Athens, and the Parthenon. The album ends with group photos on the ship and in the various places the group has visited.

Description:
A most extraordinary assemblage of 62 photographic portraits, landscapes, watercolors, ink drawings, and ephemera, curated by a wealthy and well-connected British eccentric, and bound in bespoke leather. Most of the items that are dated in the album are from the 1930s, with a few from 1950/1951. This unique and extraordinary compilation was the brainchild and decades long project of Edward Charles Le Grice, F.R.P.S. (Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society). There is some information available online about Le Grice, but nothing about this project, surely one of his proudest accomplishments, and probably a pastime which brought him much pleasure. More information on Le Grice is at the end of this description. There are 86 ivory-paper leaves/176 pages, with three sided gilt-edged. 9" w X 11" h X 2.5" d. The binding is unique: the front cover is an embossed brown-calf hard-leather version of Le Grice's own 1910 x-ray photograph of half a dozen seahorses, floating among seaweed. The spine, with… Read More

Description:
7" x 10" photo album featuring Teddy Roosevelt and what looks to be Yosemite or Yellowstone. It is in good condition, 9 leaves/18 pages, black paper, 1 leaf detached. 13 photos, plus two tucked in. The introductory image is of a man in a tent with two ladies - this is likely either Muir or Burroughs, because the fellow in the second image is most definitely Theodore Roosevelt, in white cowboy hat and waistcoat with chain, standing with other well-dressed fellows next to a steam train. Both Muir and Burroughs were known to have explored nature with Roosevelt, and published their accounts of the matter; the image of the older man is a bit blurry, though, and since both wore long white beards in later life, it is hard to definitively state who is pictured here. At any rate, the image is duplicated in one of the tucked-in photos. Roosevelt did not live long enough to reach later life; the image of him seems to be from the era of his presidency or just afterwards.
