1963. Garden City. Doubleday. 1963. 8vo., original cloth with price-clipped dust wrapper. A little chipping and light creasing to wrapper, otherwise a very good copy. First edition inscibed by Bob Hope "To Father David, This is what I do between golf games, very best, Bob Hope." A collection of anaecdotes including stories from a trip Bob Hope made to Russia in the early 1960s. [sold with] 24 pages of typescript carbon copies containing notes for Bob Hope's comedy. The majority of the notes are for the Peace Officer's Shrine Club Dinner held at the Statler-Hilton on April 20th 1964. The notes are in four sections, one based around the District Attorney William B. McKesson, another on Sheriff Peter J. Pitchess, one on Police Chief William Parker and miscellaneous notes. Several of the notes are repeated at various stages throughout the various sheets. We presume that these notes are unpublished. The other sheets of notes refer to an episode of Chrysler Theatre TV Series for 25th… Read more

Description:
1621. Padua: Martini Stampator Camerale/ Guasparri Crivellari. 1621/1623. Small oblong quarto. Twentieth century wood-patterned boards; pp. 18, 28 plates illustrating methods of carving meat with manuscript additions, missing folding plate of carving utensils; pp. 47, missing all 3 plates; very good. First editions. Significant because it contains the first printings of two parts of what became Giegher's Tre Trattati (1629). The third part, on napkin folding, was never printed individually. Il Trinciato deals with the art of carving meat, while Lo Scalco (The Steward) concerns service; the three parts together became one of the most important guides to the serving of meals in the best houses, and the carving illustrations are both fascinating and appealing. Mattia Giegher (c.1589 - c. 1639, born Matthias Jager in Moosburg, Bavaria) moved to Italy in around 1616 and was so famed for his mastery of the arts of hospitality that he lectured on the subject at the University of Padua. Banqueting was an… Read more

Description:
1904. No publisher. 1904. Large 4to (10 x 12 inches). Original half black morocco; elaborate hand-painted photo album consisting of 1 hand-illuminated leaf with signature 'Faith Bell' and date '1904', 14 cardboard leaves with hand illuminated calligraphy, illuminated borders and margins framing 34 gelatin silver or albumen photographs, mounted; with loose photograph of a young woman, presumably the author, and silhouette portrait of a woman inscribed "Yours lovingly/ Faith Bell/ 27th.Jan. 24" to reverse; a little occasional foxing, very good. A unique album, richly illuminated in gilt and coloured inks with charming watercolour vignettes surrounding atmospheric photographic views of the Lake District. The illumination covers different styles from the medieval to the Art Deco. This was clearly a labour of love that remained unfinished - the last illumination is incomplete, petering out into pencilled guidelines, while the last 15 leaves of the album are blank. Nonetheless, Faith Bell's… Read more

Description:
[New York], Brentano's [but 'manufactured in Great Britan'], 1928. Original black cloth-backed orange boards, spine lettered in orange, colour-lithographic dust-wrapper designed by F D; pp. 319; a superb copy. Judith Gautier, daughter of the romantic 'orientalist' Théofile, was an oriental scholar focusing on China and Japan. This work, originally published in 1869 is a novel of ancient China recreating life and civilisation of Imperial China. Judith Gautier is often described as Wagners "muse" during Parsifal - as Mathilde Wesendonk is supposed to have been his muse during the creation of Tristan - it is certain that Judith Gautier and Wagner were close. Allegedly Wagner named his chaise-longue after her.

1978. London: Jonathan Cape, 1978. 8vo, black publisher's boards lettered in gilt to spine; unclipped dust jacket; pp. 144; a near-fine copy, with previous owner's inscription to ffep, some very light spots, and one or two small scratches to the jacket. First edition of the author's second collection of short stories. Signed by McEwan to the title page. Written just before the publication of his first novel, In Between the Sheets sparked controversy with the author's choice of brazen and contentious subjects. In a 1979 interview, he claimed that these seven stories "were a kind of laboratory for me. They allowed me to try out different things, to discover myself as a writer."

1900. London, T. Fisher Unwin, 1900. 8vo. Original dark red pictorial cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. xxiv, 385, [6, advertisements], with frontispiece, text illustrations after photographs, sketch map and two folding maps; very light darkening to binding, one small area of the front cover bubbled, otherwise a very good and clean copy. Second impression of the first edition. 'The author, a missionary, travelled through the Belgian Congo and into the border region around with Uganda, northwest of Lake Victoria. There are numerous incidents of hunting antelope. Of particular interest are Lloyd's hunts after elephant - with a .303 rifle. As he noted, "I had always looked upon elephant hunting as being all right for those who were tired of life and longed to be freed from its worries ... " '. Looyd is not only a big game hunter and colonial missionary traveller, but reflects critically of the consequences of colonialism in Central Africa.

London and New York: Elkin Mathews & John Lane and Macmillan & Company, 1893. Original full vellum designed by Charles Ricketts, decorated and lettered in gilt; pp. [vii], 302; head of spine with a minor scuffing, gold a little faded from spine, front inner hinge stengthened, a few of the entirely uncut margins a little browned. First edition, one of 50 large paper copies of this collection of essays, several of which reflect the author's travels in Italy. The trade issue appeared in cloth. John Addington Symonds (1840—1893) was a celebrated poet, essayist and thinker. 'His specific contribution to the regeneration of society was as a pioneer in the field of gay rights; he was the first modern historian of (male) homosexuality, and the first advocate of gay liberation in Britain. When he read Plato's Phaedrus and Symposium in 1858, he realized that the ignoble behaviour of his fellow schoolboys at Harrow had an illustrious past, and when he read Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass in 1865 he… Read more

Aberdeen, James Gordon Bisset, [1919]. 8vo. Original pebble-grained beige cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt; pp. [vi], 238, map as frontispiece; initially lightly spotted, offsetting from endpapers, otherwise very good. First edition, privately printed, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper, with letter explaining the publication history, signed by the author, tipped inside front cover. This is an unedited war diary kept by a medical doctor with the field ambulance during the Turkish campaign and Gallipoli. I am just quoting a random passage which illustrates the immediacy of the text. 'Now again after a pause these guns are firing at their hardest at V. Beach - aye, and here too. August 15th. - I wrote the last clause (aye, and here too) just before a shell burst behind me … Our greatest deficiency is in personnel; we are short of our original number by three officers and thirty-eight men, this being due to casualties and sickness' (pp. 159f.).
