Description:
Trattato delle operationi chirurgiche agionte alcune osseruationi con sue figure.
Treatise on surgical operations with figures. First half of the 18th century? Large 8vo (21 x 17 cm)
Probably an abridgement in Italian by Carlo Michele Lotteri, of the 'Cours d'opérations de chirurgie' by Dionis. This conclusion is based on the identical title page of another manuscript in the Wellcome library. No record has been traced of an Italian translation of Dionis' work-first printed in Paris in 1707. This MS. is either an original translation and abridgement by Lotteri, or notes of lectures on operative surgery closely following the original text, taken down by him when a student. Produced in Turin? The plates are identical with the MS in in the Wellcome and different from the work of Dionis.

Dimensions: 19x12.7 cm (7½x5"). Chicago, 1892. Variant issue, with yellow cover pasted over later boards and library spine. Internally with old reinforcement to inner hinge. A VERY RARE Book. Spears presents a detailed depiction of Death Valley as it was in the year 1891, providing a narrative that predates Manly's account by a couple of years. "Illustrated Sketches" is distinguished as much by its pioneering photographs as by the narrative it conveys. These images might be among the earliest-if not the very first-published photographs of the Death Valley area, lending them significant historical value. Edwards… Read More

Description:
Bell, Lilian. A LITTLE SISTER TO THE WILDERNESS. Chicago, Stone & Kimball, 1895. 267 pp. 12mo., olive gilt-stamped cloth. First Edition, first issue, with no colophon on recto of leaf following close of text. The cover design was the first of two done for Stone & Kimball by Bruce Rogers. (Kramer, 42.) Provenance: copy of prominent bibliophile, Wallace Hugh Cathcart (1856-1942).A most peculiar copy with a full page presentation by Lilian Bell, the American woman novelist and travel writer. Additionally two letters of Bell to Cathcart are preserved in neat stamped envelops at the back. It appears, according to the correspondence, that this book was sent in error ("you sent the wrong man!") to Rev. Thomas Dixon Jr, the minister and white supremist best known as the storyteller behind the 1915 D. W. Griffith Film The Birth of a Nation. The intended recipient was Dr. Thomas Dixon of New York as Bell evidently intended. The racist Rev. Dixon pasted his photograph to the inside cover and has a… Read More
