Description:
Joseph Schull was born in the US, but grew up and lived in Canada for the rest of his life, where he served both in the Canadian army and later the navy. Following his military career he focussed his attention on his writing, through some of which he communicated his experiences in the military and in combat.
In "I, Jones, Soldier" he presents in verse form the experiences of soldiers awaiting the final command prior to entering battle juxtaposed with the reflective meditations of a solder on the courses in his life that have brought him to this particular moment. As the jacket description describes it, "The thoughts in the mind of every soldier, of all the men engulfed in this war, who fight its battles, die in its hateful ugliness, are here made vocal." A fascinating poetic insight into the mind of a soldier in the heat of battle presented by one who had been there.

Description:
A study of Tennyson's Idylls of the King, including a comparison with Browning by John F. Genung, professor of rhetoric at Amherst College. Based on a lecture he gave in Boston, it is described by the Journal of Education as "thorough and illuminative, perhaps beyond anything before attempted on the subject" (vol. 66, no. 19, 1907). This copy is in very good shape, with some wear to the red fabric covering the boards, and some mild bumping to the corners. The interior is mostly clean, with bright red chapter numbers, drop capitals, and rubrics. There are a couple instances of underlining in pencil.

Description:
Robert Flanagan was a Canadian poet born in Toronto in 1946. This book, Incisions, was his second book of poetry published. The poems are unique for their incredible brevity, but are nevertheless, or perhaps because of this, all the more impactful. The collection includes a preface written by Margaret Atwood. In describing his poems, Atwood wrote in the preface: "Incisions is condensed poetry. The poems themselves are brief as haiku, but dropped into the mind they expand like paper flowers in water or shot bullets."
This copy is in very good condition with a dust jacket in good condition. There is a fair bit of wear to the dust jack, but otherwise it is intact. There are no obvious blemishes to the interior of the book.

Description:
Written by the husband and wife writing team of Egerton (1858-1920) and Agnes Castle (1860-1922), the Incomparable Bellairs was a work of popular fiction recounting the drama of the resort town of Bath, set in the Georgian period. This work is a sequel to The Bath Comedy, and the two were amongst their best-known works. This volume is part of the Nelson series of uniform classics which was published between 1909-1937. No date of publication is given in this volume. Overall, it is in Very Good condition. There is some light bumping and wear to the corners, and to the top and bottom of the spine. The gilt lettering and detail on the spine are clearly and in tact, though perhaps a little faded. There is a signature from a previous owner on the from endpaper. The dust jacket is missing.

Description:
Not to be confused with the British wartime prime minister, the author of this novel is the American writer Winston Churchill (1871-1947). While his most popular works were those of historical fiction set during the American Revolutionary and Civil wars, The Inside of the Cup reflects the tenor of his later works, which focussed on social, political, and religious themes. Originally serialised in Hearst Magazine beginning in 1912, the story has a significant moralising and religious tone intended not merely to entertain but also to instruct readers in the tenants of a form of social Christianity. This volume is missing its dust jacket, but is in Good condition. There is some discolouration to the fabric on the spine, as well as some wear and minor bumping to the corners. There is an old library sticker on the spine. Internally, the front hinge is slightly cracked. There is a bookplate from a previous owner on the endpaper, and the flyleaf has a small newspaper clipping distinguishing the American… Read More

Description:
Hugh Garner (1913-1979) was born in England, but moved with his family to Canada in 1919. His writing was greatly informed by his experiences growing up in the working-class neighbourhood of Cabbagetown in Toronto, Ontario. As a result, and given his support of socialism, his realistic literary works frequently focus on the working-class and the exploitation of the worker. His 1950 novel Cabbagetown perfectly reflects his preferred subject matter.
The Intruders may perhaps be understood as a return to Cabbagetown for Garner. Set once again in the Toronto neighbourhood, this time Garner provides an account of the meeting of the work-class residents of Cabbagetown, for many of whom the goal has always been to escape the neighbourhood, with the new middle-class residents who are moving into the neighbourhood.
This volume is inscribed by the author, and is in Very Good condition, with some minor wear to the edges of the boards and spine. The dust jacket is present and may also be said to be in Very Good… Read More

Description:
Edwin John Dove Pratt (1883-1964) was one of Canada's most notable and unique poets of the twentieth century. Born in Newfoundland, he studied philosophy, psychology, and theology at the University of Toronto, and was ultimately appointed to the English Department of Victoria College at the University of Toronto, the library of which bears his name. Much of his poetry reflected his Newfoundland origins, if not explicitly, then in his frequent treatments of maritime and nautical themes. Other topics addressed in his poetry included science and technology and socio-economic concerns.
The Iron Door is perhaps something of a departure from his other works, and more philosophically inclined. Inspired by a dream prompted by the death of his mother, the poem is concerned with an iron door set in a cliff face that separates this world from the one waiting after death, and how various people come to be before it, and their various reactions to it. One thousand copies of the work were printed, and it was… Read More

Description:
Written by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre based on their in-depth research conducted over three years and based on documents, transcripts, cables, and other first-hand accounts and evidence, including interviews of participants and witnesses, Is Paris Burning? is a fascinating account of a key event in the Second World War, the liberation of Paris. The title, Is Paris Burning?, comes from a question asked by Hitler on August 25, 1944, as he wished the city to be destroyed rather than reclaimed by the Allies. Despite this, Paris was liberated, and Is Paris Burning? provides a detailed of account of the taking of Paris, the resistance's fight against the occupying forces, and its ultimate liberation at the end of August, 1944.
