Internally a beautiful copy. Clean and tidy printing. The last few pages have a light water stain to one corner. Bonichon (died 1662) was a French Oratorian monk. Between 1656 and 1658, Bonichon wrote three tracts on the subject of the authority of Bishops in the ecclesiastical hierarchy (over the authority of clergy). L'Aiglon was Napoleon II or Napoleon François Charles Joseph (1811-1832), king of Rome, emperor of the French, prince of Parma, duke of Reichstadt. Although short lived, In 1900, the writer Edmond Rostand paid tribute to him by making him the main character in a play called L'Aiglon. Signed dedication to paper cover by the author, Abel Desjardins (1814-1886); a French historian. Desjardins was a professor of history at the Royal College of Angers (1843-1847). Having obtained a doctorate in letters, he was appointed professor of history at the Faculty of Letters in Dijon (1847-1856). In 1856, he transferred to the Faculty of Letters in Caen. In 1858, he was appointed to the Faculty of Letters of Douai where he remained until his death in 1886, holding the deanship during the same period (1858-1886). To the last leaf, is given the number of this copy (17). This copy has the owner's engraved bookplate (Bibliothèque d'Eug. Jacob) to an additional front end paper, plus an additional handwritten half title has also been bound in. The same previous owner has made their own protective slipcase - which has kept the soft hand coloured cover clean and tidy. A tour of the year in engravings, poetry and commentary. Slightly darkened to the edges, but without chips or marks. First gather is slightly loose. 180 x 120 mm (7 x 4¾ inches). Title page states that this is the "Last" edition, augmented by the author. (Which turned out to be true, as he died the year after publication). Recent full leather binding with red label and gilt titles. 236 pages (pagination is 209-445pp follows the larger work). Index to rear. Text block is in very good condition, with a little foxing / darkening only. Guibert wrote these "charitable" texts to make academic medicinal recipes available to the general public for an affordable price. Issued under the title "L'Ecumoire" whilst the original was Tansaï et Neadarné. Bizarrely, the original title was used at the head of each page - so if this was an attempt to disguise the work, it was a fairly thin disguise. The original text only edition - published 1734 - was addressed to Beijing. In this edition, a frontispiece engraving is repeated in each volume. This shows the Emperor of China and his Court with monkeys in the trees. The preface claims that this is a classic work of Chinese antiquity. Title pages both in red and black. Bound in full speckled leather, with contemporary designs in gilt to the spine, and burgundy title label. Very slight rubbing to the binding only, in very presentable condition. The top edge of the "shirt" has been split, and now repaired with archival tape. The rear lace closures are missing. There are some foxing spots to the last few pages.
