Nestor Makhno. Black Cross. [1969 Calendar]. London: Black Cross, 1969. Black and green inks on red paper. Ca. 15 x 20 in. Rare silkscreen poster, Very good, wrinkled edges and small closed tears at the margins.
Nestor Makhno was a legendary Ukrainian anarcho-communist revolutionary and the commander of an independent anarchist army in Ukraine in 1917-22. His attempt to create agrarian anarchist communes in rural districts of the Ukraine set him at odds with Bolshevik forces in Moscow. He remains an inspiration to anarchist and anti-authoritarian movements in Europe to the present day.

Description:
[8] pp. chiefly illustrated. "Special souvenir revolutionary festival brochure," being a mixture of text, cut-ups, and détournée comic strips that refer to student protests in 1968 at the Essex University, Liverpool University, and the London School of Economics. 4to. Near fine. folded. [1253]
According to an interview with T.J. Clark (Power to the People, 2013) "In 1968 Essex University hosted a dreadful "revolutionary festival" with Godard and co. in attendance. A group of naysayers produced something called the Manifesto of Rationalism in hopes of spoiling the party, and I remember that my contribution was a strip cartoon beginning with a quote from Lewis Namier: 'Liberty is the fruit of slow growth in a stable society.'" Clark goes on to express sincere hope that the item won't be recovered for future scholars to examine. So much for that! As of May 2021, we can locate only one other holding in North America.

[1449] Goldstone is a noted Los Angeles artist who has collaborated with Brad Hwang, Chris Burden, and Mark Pauline of Survival Research Laboratories. The "target" was a two-level free-standing parking lot in downtown Los Angeles. Activities included carnival games designed by artists, live performances, art exhibitions, and film and video screenings. Off-site gallery exhibitions, poetry readings, and an evening of… Read More

Description:
36 pp. booklet in Spanish, illustrated throughout. Oblong 8vo. Very good. Illus. stiff wraps, extremities rubbed. [1749]
Promotional booklet issued by a Mexican tobacco manufacturer to promote American football, which once rivaled soccer as the country's most popular collegiate sport. The game first came to Mexico in the 1920s, imported from the United States by Mexican students returning from American prep schools. In 1927, two brothers -- both fans of Notre Dame -- launched the first formal Mexican football team at National Autonomous University of Mexico. The UNAM "Pumas" eventually became so dominant in Mexico that the team drew attention across the border in the United States, attracting invitations to participate in regional Bowls and tournaments. Everything changed in 1968, when the football season was canceled across Mexico in the wake of the Tlatelolco massacre, which killed hundreds of UNAM students. During the years to follow, as the Mexican government sought to disrupt large gatherings of… Read More

[1190]
A foundational work of feminism in Mexico, Mujeres Notablas Mexicanas was first published nearly 15 years after its author's premature death at age 50. As a journalist and champion of women's rights during the middle of the 19th century, Wright de Kleinhans staked her career on proving the inherent equality of women to men at a time when Mexican public life was deeply chauvinistic. To make her case, she joined learned societies that had previously only admitted men, and started a feminist journal called Mujeres de Anáhuac, which… Read More
