First Edition in English.
Original French edition appeared in 1713. Translated by Mr. Abel Boyer, it is an account of the amorous intrigues of the Restoration court by French nobleman, Philibert, Count de Grammont as told to his brother in law Anthony Hamilton.
Because of the content, the book was on the "Vatican Index" until 1965.
1714 edition with much later (dark green coloured) boards and endpapers. Boards are half calf and in very good condition. Raised bands on spine. Morocco label. Gilt lettering. Head of spine a little rubbed. Binding very good.Text block well preserved. Some notations on title page (see images). Some light occasional foxing and some occasional staining on leaves.
Ultimately, a very good scarce First Edition.

Memoirs of Sir Robert Peel in 2 volumes by the Irish writer William Hamilton Maxwell (author of The Life of the Duke of Wellington). See images.
First Edition. London 1842
These volumes chronicle the life and political career of Sir Robert Peel, the British statesman who became leader of the Conservative Party and served twice as Prime Minister and was one of the most important figures in 19th century British politics. The volumes also delve into his personal life, his relationship with family and friends and interests outside of politics.
The author, William Hamilton Maxwell (1792-1850), was a novelist and writer of history who claimed to have served with the British Army at the Battle of Waterloo but the veracity of this claim has been doubted.
Both volumes are very good to near Fine.

Contemporay half calf over marbled boards. Raised bands on spines with morocco labels. Gilt lettering. Boards showing only minor wear.

Very good plus copy in publisher's original binding. It is author's second collection of ghost stories consisting of: A School Story, The Rose Garden, The Tractate Middoth, Casting The Runes, The Stalls Of Barchester Cathedral, Martin's Close and Mr. Humphreys And His Inheritance.
Book is very good plus at least. Rarely does one encounter a copy in such condition. There is a small mark (ink?) on front board. Some light soiling on a small portion of rear board. Book has a very slight forward lean.
Inernally, remarkably clean. The leaves are remarkably bright, free of foxing and not age toned.
Fore and lower edges are untrimmed. Endpapers (front and rear) are browned. First edition with an interesting provenance.
Book is from the library of Grace,Marchioness Curzon of Kedleston the second wife of UK Conservative statesman Lord Curzon who, among other positions, was Foreign Secretary until 1924. Grace was a wealthy 32 year old widow when she married Lord Curzon and acquired 3 stepdaughters one of who married UK facsist leader Oswald Mosley. Grace is reputed to have had an affair with Mosley. The book contains the signature and bookplate of Grace.
Boords are clean and binding tight. Spine ends pinched with a tiny tear at end of bottom spine. One corner bumped. Slight spotting on early leaves and to a lesser extent final few leaves. Light spotting to edge of text block. Lower edge untrimmed.Minor inscription of a previous owner on first blank and also previous sale price and comment in pencil. Very small label of a Buenos Aires bookshop on front pastedown. Grace's first husband was an Irish Argentinian.
A very good copy.

Book is solid. Binding tight.
Boards are clean but somewhat faded particularly spine. Some peeling at one joint (approx. 1 inch at head and 2.5 inches at tail) with a little netting exposed. Not greatly significant. A little wear at corners.
Leaves are generally clean with light to moderate foxing to early and last few leaves only. No markings except for previous sale price and brief description in pencil on front pastedown.
A solid copy of a scarce Wodehouse title.
