Travel narrative by Thomas Boteler, of the survey expedition of HMS Barracouta and Leven as they survey the East African coast, and the River Gambia. Upon their return, they had surveyed 30,000 nautical mailes of coast, prepared 83 charts, and lost half their crew to tropical diseases. With four plates and few text illustrations. Wear to the joints, rubbing to the boards, surface loss to the edges of the boards, and spots of surface loss and creasing to the spine, especially one spot affecting the titling of Vol. II. Hinges feel fragile, though appear to be holding and are not cracked at the time of description. Half leather over marbled paper boards, with gilt lettering and designs along the spine. Good binding.

The authors admit that "a rather novel arrangement of material has been made." There are some preliminary materials to provide perspective and set the stage, but the body the work is given up to a virtually undigested patchwork of original accounts, most of them from the Federal viewpoint."~~ (Krick 380). We learn from wiki that Mr. Boner became known as "North Carolina's First Man of Letters."~~ (Krick 44). Good binding.

It is certainly from the "lost cause" era (the dedication is to "The Black ‘Uncles' and ‘Aunties' and ‘Mammies' whose matchless fidelity during the war evoked the admiration not only of the South, but of civilized humanity the world over." The author, Norman Kittrell, was a Judge in Texas. (Krick 98). Very Good binding.

He adds that Walter Neale called Polllard "the mightiest critic of our day." Your cataloguer is speechless. (Krick 399). Very Good binding.

This Neale imprint we nearly took home to read on the basis of what Krick said about it: "Dick loves Ruth, who is being sent away to school, but not before an exciting spelling bee takes place. The pair winds up joyously married, of course, with Ruth exclaiming, "I am so glad I am the wife of a Southerner." (Krick 434). Very Good binding.
