London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1809. FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [ii], xxxvi, 215, [1], 67, [1], lxxx, [2]. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine divided by gilt rolls, black morocco label, other compartments with central gilt sunburst tools. First and last leaves foxed. Rubbed and worn around the edges, label chipped, joints cracked and reglued, hinges relined. Label removed from front pastedown. History was one of the side interests pursued by George Rose (1744-1818) outside his parliamentary business. This criticism of Fox’s history of James II drew on the Marchmont papers, which Rose held as executor for the third Earl of Marchmont and inheritor of his library.

Contemporary sprinkled calf, boards bordered with triple gilt rules enclosing corner gilt tools, spines divided by triple gilt rules, brown morocco labels to 2nd and 3rd compartments, other compartments tooled elaborately in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. A little rubbed, a few small marks to boards. An attractively-bound expanded revised version of a three volume set from 1764 which also claimed a London publication, possibly erroneously. Adding to the deception the ‘2 Swedish gentlemen’ credited with its composition in the subtitle were in fact 1 French gentleman, Pierre-Jean Grosley, (1718-1785) man of letters and contributor to Diderot’s Encyclopédie. A sharp, signed copy of Shapcott’s 7th collection, winner of the Costa Book of The Year Award in 2010.

Edinburgh: Published at John Knox’s House by William J. Hay, 1905. Folio, 18 parts, most containing 3 unbound bifolia with a total of 54 tipped-in collotype plates. Original olive green card folders printed in black. One opening a little toned from old newspaper clipping insertion (now removed). Folders variously creased or a little chipped to edges and lightly soiled. 2 sheets advertising signed prints to subscribers loosely inserted to part 8. The complete set, as issued in shilling parts, of postcard-maker and custodian of John Knox’s House William J. Hay’s survey of old Edinburgh. Most of the parts consist of 3 unnumbered bifolia, with letterpress to the first leaf and with a plate tipped-in to the second; the first part also contains an introduction on a separate bifolium and an order form and parts 9 and 18 contain title-pages and contents for the first and second series respectively. Dublin: The Dolmen Press, 1967. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 55, [1]. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blue-grey dustjacket printed in green and red, wrap-around band printed in green. Dustjacket a little sunned, cloth to fore-edge of front board just slightly rippled from damp. A few marginal pencil marks. This copy retains the promotional band proclaiming it a choice of the Poetry Book Society Ltd.

London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1836. 8vo, pp. xvi, 303, [9] + frontispiece and 2 plates. Contemporary patterned purple cloth, spine lettered and blocked in gilt. Plates dampmarked. Spine somewhat sunned, extremities bumped and a little worn. This biography of Italian classical scholar Olympia Morata (1526-1555) is sometimes attributed to Caroline Anne Southey. It was first published in 1834, and carries an advertisement for the second printing of Smyth’s ‘Probation and Other Tales’ to the verso of the half-title.

New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1893. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. 237, [1]. Original pale green cloth, spine and front board lettered and blocked in gilt. Spine ends a little bumped, most of the gilt rubbed from spine. Inscribed by the author for Frederick W. Skiff (January 20th 1917) with manuscript 4-line poem ‘The Hills of Song’, bookplate of Frederick W. Skiff to pastedown, address label to Skiff from Scollard loosely inserted, bookseller’s ticket of Meier & Frank Co., Portland, Oregon to rear pastedown. A travelogue interspersed with verse by the American poet Clinton Scollard (1860-1932), relating a journey through Europe and into Syria. This copy is inscribed to the book collector Frederick Woodward Skiff (1867-1947); Skiff’s extensive library was dispersed by auctioneers Butterfield and Butterfield in 1947.

Preston: The Harris Press, 1967. NO. 153 OF 200 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 4to, pp. [18]. Stitched as issued in black paper wrappers printed in white. Wrappers slightly marked. Signed to the flyleaf: ‘Hugh MacDiarmid, Sept 1967’. The first separate publication of this poem, first printed in 1934’s ‘Stony Limits and Other Poems’. It was designed and printed by students at the School of Art, Harris College and has 4 striking full-page colour illustrations by Alan D. Powell. In addition to the numbered limitation to the rear this copy is also signed by MacDiarmid to the front flyleaf.

Two leaves with portions torn away causing partial loss of 10 or 12 lines of text on each affected page. Contemporary calf, boards bordered with a gilt roll, flat spine divided by gilt rules between gilt rolls, black morocco label (reading ‘Virgilius / Maittaire’), other compartments with small gilt flower tool. Some spotting and staining, several marginal tears and paper flaws. Rubbed and scuffed, extremities worn. Ownership inscription of Thos. Briggs to flyleaf, along with gift inscription to S. Canning, March 28 1802, two leaves with substantial marginal notes in English elucidating allusions. An extremely rare printing of Virgil, the text mainly reproducing that of Michael Maittaire (1715, reprinted 1777). Londini [London]: [Riccardi Press for the Medici Society], 1912. 8vo, pp. [vi], 415, [1]. Printed prize leaf bound in before half-title. Untrimmed and mostly unopened in contemporary green vellum boards, front board blocked in gilt with the arms of Eton College, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Somewhat discoloured overall, spine sunned and spotted. The prize leaf filled in awarding the book to E.R. Willoughby Radcliffe and signed by headmaster Cyril Alington, dated 1917. The unlimited one-volume issue - printed in black throughout, unlike the 2-volume issue limited to 525 copies (mostly in quarter buckram) which, like the other Bibliotheca Riccardiana editions, had initial capitals in blue. Meant to be used, this version is less commonly seen than the limited, and a number were given as Eton prize like this, almost always in special bindings though this green vellum is particularly unusual.

Glasguae [Glasgow]: Excudebant Robertus & Andreas Foulis, 1753. Foolscap 8vo, pp. [iv], xvii, [i], 63, [1], xxv, [i], 126, [2, ads]. Contemporary plain red morocco, spine divided by raised bands, black morocco label. Lightly toned, some spotting. A few marks, spine a little darkened, a touch of rubbing to extremities. Modern bookplate to front pastedown, along with early ownership inscription of Donald Campbell. An unusual edition, containing Tibullus & Propertius without their usual companion Catullus, and in an unusual binding of a nice piece of red morocco without any gilding apart from the lettering piece. Later plain paper wrappers, numbered in ink. One or two paper flaws (no loss of sense), some light soiling and marking. Wrappers dusty. A few pencil marks and marginal doodles. A London reprint of the Delphin edition of Horace, unusually bound into five parts in wrappers - perhaps to make each part easier to use for study. ESTC T46236.

One leaf (p1, final sequence) with an old paper flaw repaired early on, one or two other torn corners. Extremities the merest touch rubbed, a few small marks. Some spotting and foxing, especially to title-pages. Bindings rubbed and scratched, a little light wear to extremities. Gilt ownership stamp of ‘Caissottil’ to front boards. A scarce large-paper copy of this ‘beautiful and faithful’ reprint of Ernesti’s edition of Homer (first published 1759-64), itself based on the work of Samuel Clarke. Ownership inscription of Grenville H. Wheler to title-page, a few pencil annotations elsewhere. A scarce reprinting of the Delphin edition of Sallust for the UK market. ESTC locates copies at Eton, Oxford, and the Rylands only in the UK, plus Boston Public, William and Mary, and Illinois in the USA. ESTC N26478.

Oxonii [Oxford]: Johannes Henricus et Jacobus Parker, 1859. 16mo, pp. [iv], 414, [2]. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine decorated with gilt rolls to head and foot, green morocco label. Some toning and spotting. Binding rubbed. A handful of ink and pencil notes. An early example of the Oxford Pocket Classics series published by archaeologist and publisher John Henry Parker (1806-1884) and his son Jacob Parker (1832-1912). The editor’s note is dated 1848 but the earliest edition we have traced was published in 1852; it was frequently reprinted thereafter though each issue is scarce: Worldcat and Library Hub between them locate this one only in the National Library of China and the Welsh National Trust house Lanhydrock.

A neat set of P. Austin Nuttall’s revision of John Stirling’s 1751 edition of Horace in the publisher’s binding. Unusually, this copy contains ads for itself to the pastedowns, advising that vols. 1, 3 and 4 can be had separate at 3s. a volume; those in vols. 2-4 have a typographical error corrected in ink.
