Lesser-known novel by one of Portugal's most prolific authors. The illegitimate son of a poor family, Camillo Castello-Branco (1825-1890) was orphaned at a young age, and began his early career in the 1850s writing a series of Gothic tales. The present volume is one of his last of the genre, published a year following his release from prison for committing adultery with a married woman. Correspondences between John Bowles and a Mr. Adam expounding Bowles' fierce disapproval of the late Duke of Bedford (mainly for not displaying model Christian observance to Bowles' liking): "I should have never have been disposed to publish one word respecting the late Duke of Bedford, if I had not felt that the unqualified eulogies which were passed upon him [by Fox and others] had a tendency to corrupt the public sentiment by holding forth as a perfect character a noble man who, whatever his excellencies might be, was known to be deficient in his attendance on public worship."
